Advancing the global public health agenda for NAFLD: a consensus statement

Jeffrey Lazarus et al.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a potentially serious liver disease that affects a significant portion of the global adult population, but has received little attention from the global public health community. This has led to a lack of inclusion of NAFLD in national and international strategies and policies for non-communicable diseases, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive public health response to the disease.

Comparative efficacy of an optimal exam between ultrasound versus abbreviated MRI for HCC screening in NAFLD cirrhosis: A prospective study

Daniel Q. Huang et al.

Summary: This prospective multicenter study compared liver visualization scores of ultrasound (US) and abbreviated hepatobiliary phase (HBP) magnetic resonance imaging (AMRI) in participants with NAFLD cirrhosis. The study found that US had a higher proportion of severe visualisation limitations compared to AMRI. Obesity was identified as an independent predictor for severe visualisation limitation on US. The study suggests reporting US adequacy in clinical studies and considering AMRI for HCC screening when US is suboptimal.

Rational HCC screening approaches for patients with NAFLD

Amit G. Singal et al.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with an increased risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), especially among those with cirrhosis or advanced fibrosis. The prevalence of NAFLD-related HCC is rising globally, but there is currently limited data on the efficacy of HCC surveillance in NAFLD and how to apply it.

Substantial gaps in evaluation and treatment of patients with hepatitis B in the US

Qing Ye et al.

Summary: In the US, approximately half of patients with chronic HBV infection did not undergo complete laboratory evaluation, with only 73% receiving adequate evaluation. Among treatment-eligible patients according to major society guidelines, only 60.4% to 54.3% received treatment within 12 months.

Clinical characteristics, surveillance, treatment allocation, and outcomes of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease-related hepatocellular carcinoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Darren Jun Hao Tan et al.

Summary: Compared with hepatocellular carcinoma due to other causes, patients with NAFLD-related hepatocellular carcinoma are older, have higher BMI, and are more likely to have metabolic comorbidities and cardiovascular disease. The surveillance rate is lower, but the proportion of patients without cirrhosis is higher.

Randomized Clinical Trial of Inreach With or Without Mailed Outreach to Promote Hepatitis C Screening in a Difficult-to-Reach Patient Population

Nirali Desai et al.

Summary: This study found that a combination of inreach and mailed outreach significantly increased HCV screening completion in difficult-to-reach patients, but the completion rates in both groups remained low. Little difference was observed in linkage to care among patients with confirmed HCV infection.

Summary: The prevalence of NAFLD-related HCC is projected to continue rising globally, with NASH expected to increase and obesity as a major risk factor. Urgent measures are needed to address this growing problem.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Differential characteristics and outcomes of Asian and non-Asian patients with HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma

Daniel Q. Huang et al.

Summary: This study compared Asian and non-Asian patients with HBV-related HCC and found that non-Asian patients were more likely to have HIV or hepatitis C co-infection, cirrhosis, decompensated liver disease, and advanced BCLC stage. However, non-Asian patients without cirrhosis had lower 5-year survival compared to Asians, and non-Asian ethnicity was independently associated with twice the risk of mortality in patients without cirrhosis.

Mechanisms and disease consequences of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Rohit Loomba et al.

Summary: NAFLD and NASH are leading chronic liver diseases worldwide, causing progressive liver injury that can lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. These diseases are associated with hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism, and are influenced by genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors.

Experience With Changing Etiology and Nontransplant Curative Treatment Modalities for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in a Real-Life Setting-A Retrospective Descriptive Analysis

Suneel Tohra et al.

Summary: The study found that viral hepatitis is the most common etiological factor for HCC in Northern India, with NASH and alcohol as etiologies increasing over time. In patients with unifocal HCC, there was no difference in overall 3-year survival between those treated with SR or RFA, but the SR group had better disease-free survival.
