Summary: In this study, DANC was incorporated into chitosan to manufacture biodegradable films with enhanced gas barrier properties. The addition of DANC significantly improved the gas barrier performance and mechanical strength of the composite film. Chitosan/DANC films exhibited superior thermal stability and gas barrier compared to chitosan/CNC films.

Controlled release of enrofloxacin by vanillin-crosslinked chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol blends

Ilkay Karakurt et al.

Summary: The study successfully achieved sustained release of ENR drug by preparing CS-PVA blend matrix transdermal system, characterized properties changes of blend films before and after crosslinking, and found that increasing vanillin concentration changed the diffusion mechanism. The results suggest that these matrix films have the potential to be applied in transdermal drug delivery systems.

Modification of heat-induced whey protein isolate hydrogel with highly bioactive glass particles results in promising biomaterial for bone tissue engineering

Michal Dziadek et al.

Summary: This study focused on the design and evaluation of novel hydrogels based on whey protein isolate (WPI) for tissue regeneration. Modified with bioactive glass (BG) and produced through heat-induced gelation, the hydrogels showed high porosity with homogeneous distribution of BG particles, affecting pore size and reducing material porosity. The presence of BG particles improved thermal stability, decreased enzymatic degradation, and promoted mineralization in simulated biological fluids. In vitro tests demonstrated cytocompatibility and support for osteoblastic cell functions in the hydrogels.

PCL and PCL/bioactive glass biomaterials as carriers for biologically active polyphenolic compounds: Comprehensive physicochemical and biological evaluation

Michal Dziadek et al.

Summary: Polymeric and bioactive glass-modified composite films loaded with polyphenols extracted from sage have been successfully developed. The polyphenolic compounds significantly altered material properties and exhibited biological activity. PPh can act as plasticizers for PCL and coupling agents in composite materials, improving mechanical performance.
