Assessing opioid overdose risk: a review of clinical prediction models utilizing patient-level data

Iraklis Erik Tseregounis et al.

Summary: This comprehensive review examined patient-level factors associated with opioid-related overdose risk and the development of clinical risk prediction models in the United States. While existing models demonstrated good performance, they tended to overestimate the risk of overdose for low-risk patients. Future studies should focus on external validation and calibration of prediction models in order to translate findings into clinical practice effectively.

External validation of an opioid misuse machine learning classifier in hospitalized adult patients

Majid Afshar et al.

Summary: Opioid misuse screening in hospitals is resource-intensive and rarely done. An automated approach leveraging routinely captured electronic health record (EHR) data may be easier for hospitals to institute. The study validated a machine-learning classifier for identifying cases of opioid misuse, showing good discrimination and potential for comprehensive automated opioid identification.

Predicting Opioid Use Disorder and Associated Risk Factors in a Medicaid Managed Care Population

Wanzhen Gao et al.

Summary: The study developed and validated a predictive model for opioid use disorder (OUD) and identified factors such as ethnicity, gender, age, social determinants of health (SDOH), and opioid prescription patterns that increased the likelihood of OUD diagnosis. By utilizing machine learning infrastructure, the study aimed to proactively reduce OUD-related structural barriers and prevent OUD from occurring through person-centered care and interventions.
