Marine and freshwater regime changes impact a community of migratory Pacific salmonids in decline

Kyle L. Wilson et al.

Summary: The study reveals three productivity regimes for a community of Pacific anadromous salmonids over a 40-year period, showing significant declines in Steelhead, Dolly Varden, and Coastal Cutthroat Trout populations, moderate declines in Coho Salmon, and no change in Pink Salmon. These regime changes are associated with various cumulative effects across the salmon life cycle, highlighting the impact of changing environments on population dynamics and resilience in ecological communities.

Learning from Indigenous knowledge holders on the state and future of wild Pacific salmon

Andrea J. Reid et al.

Summary: Indigenous research methodologies were employed to understand the state of wild Pacific salmon and the relationships between fish, people, and the environment in British Columbia. Through interviews with 48 knowledge holders, it was found that modern salmon catches are much lower than decades ago and the top threats identified by Elders include aquaculture, climate change, contaminants, industrial development, and infectious diseases. The study also revealed that these threats not only affect salmon but also have implications for aquatic health and human well-being.

Indigenous Systems of Management for Culturally and Ecologically Resilient Pacific Salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) Fisheries

William Atlas et al.

Summary: Indigenous management of Pacific salmon demonstrates the wisdom and sustainability of multigenerational local knowledge, contrasting sharply with contemporary management. Vulnerabilities in colonial governance and harvest management have led to declining salmon resources in many areas. Revitalizing traditional salmon management systems can improve prospects for sustainable fisheries and healthy fishing communities.

Portfolio simplification arising from a century of change in salmon population diversity and artificial production

Michael H. H. Price et al.

Summary: The study revealed that wild sockeye salmon populations in the Skeena River watershed have declined over the past century, but the artificial enhancement of one population has offset these declines to maintain aggregate levels similar to historical ones. Population diversity has decreased by 70%, with a shift in life-history diversity. Despite stability in total returns, a reduction in spatial extent may impact local fisheries and ecosystems.

Ecosystem response persists after a prolonged marine heatwave

Robert M. Suryan et al.

Summary: Established monitoring programs in the Gulf of Alaska following the Exxon Valdez oil spill over 30 years ago have been successful in assessing recovery from oil spill impacts and now provide valuable insights into ecosystem responses to marine heatwaves. The 2014-2016 northeast Pacific marine heatwave in the Gulf of Alaska led to abrupt changes across trophic levels, with responses persisting for at least 5 years. Anticipated increases in marine heatwaves under current climate projections suggest uncertainty about the Gulf of Alaska ecosystem returning to a pre-PMH state.

The Natural Regulation and Relevance of Wild and Hatchery Coho Salmon Production in the Strait of Georgia

Richard Beamish et al.

Summary: The commercial and recreational fishery for Coho Salmon in the Strait of Georgia declined in the 1990s and was closed in 1998. It was observed that ocean carrying capacity seemed to regulate production more than the number of juvenile Coho Salmon. Even with a 52% reduction in releases of Coho Salmon from Canadian hatcheries from 2010-2018, the average abundance of hatchery fish surviving through to September of their first ocean year did not change.

Decolonial Model of Environmental Management and Conservation: Insights from Indigenous-led Grizzly Bear Stewardship in the Great Bear Rainforest

K. A. Artelle et al.

Summary: Global declines in biodiversity are seen as profound ecological and social crises, especially in areas subjected to colonization. Many believe that Indigenous-led governance systems could help address these trends, but the process of decolonizing dominant management and conservation approaches is not always clear.

Understanding barriers, access, and management of marine mixed-stock fisheries in an era of reconciliation: Indigenous-led salmon monitoring in British Columbia

Jade R. Steel et al.

Summary: The study examined the perceptions of Hailzaqv (Heiltsuk) fishers towards salmon fisheries and their management, identifying low salmon abundance, increased fishing competition, and high costs as barriers to access and equity for these Indigenous fishers. The research emphasizes the importance of community involvement and Indigenous-led management for the future of salmon management.

Thermal sensitivity and flow-mediated migratory delays drive climate risk for coastal sockeye salmon

Summary: This study tracked the migration of sockeye salmon in the Koeye River and found that survival rates rapidly decreased when water temperatures exceeded 15 degrees Celsius, with a significant interaction between temperature and flow affecting survival.
