Personnel scheduling during Covid-19 pandemic

Giorgio Zucchi et al.

Summary: This paper discusses a real-life personnel scheduling problem in a large Italian pharmaceutical distribution warehouse during the Covid-19 pandemic. It proposes a mixed integer linear programming solution and shows that the optimal schedule generated by the model outperforms the one produced by the company. Additionally, scalability tests on larger random instances demonstrate high quality solutions can be achieved within reasonable CPU time using an open-source MILP solver.

Summary: This study presents an alternative approach to integrating scheduling with control decisions, avoiding the complexity of dealing with integer variables. By treating scheduling as a dynamic system and incorporating the process unit model to form a switched system, efficient optimization of multi-product continuous processes is achieved. Solutions obtained through nonlinear programming provide a dynamic description of scheduling and production processes, offering a promising alternative to mixed-integer models.
