Thermochromic Hydrogels with Dynamic Solar Modulation and Regulatable Critical Response Temperature for Energy-Saving Smart Windows

Gang Xu et al.

Summary: In this work, a versatile thermochromic hydrogel system was developed by introducing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles into a crosslinked copolymer. The smart windows made from this hydrogel system showed excellent solar modulation ability, dual responsiveness, and adjustable phase transition temperature. They selectively blocked infrared light during the day while allowing ultraviolet and visible light through, benefiting indoor illumination and heat insulation. At night, the windows became opaque to protect privacy. This hydrogel-based smart window design offers a promising solution for energy-saving buildings.

Information-Providing Flexible and Transparent Smart Window Display

Jonguk Yang et al.

Summary: A novel smart window capable of real-time information conversion has been developed by advancing the light transmittance control of existing smart windows. The window display panel is fabricated by synthesizing poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNI-PAM)-N,N-methylenebisacrylamide-crosslinked hydrogels (NBcH) and near-infrared (NIR) absorption-heating films sandwiched between two plastic substrates. The smart window can act like a glass curtain, selectively making a desired location transparent or opaque and displaying various colorful characters and images in real time.

Transparent Power-Generating Windows Based on Solar-Thermal-Electric Conversion

Qihao Zhang et al.

Summary: The technology presented combines solar-thermal-electric conversion with wavelength-selective absorption to overcome the limitations of reduced power-conversion efficiency in transparent photovoltaics. By using a wavelength-selective film of Cs0.33WO3 and resin, it achieves high visible-light transmittance and outstanding ultraviolet and infrared absorbance, producing heat without sacrificing transparency. The prototype, coupled with thermoelectric power generation, demonstrates high conversion efficiency comparable to state-of-the-art transparent photovoltaics, enriching the library of on-site energy-saving and transparent power generation.
