Effects of environmental conditions on the emission and odor-active compounds from Fraxinus mandshurica Rupr

Qifan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the odor attributes and environmental conditions affecting the emission of Fraxinus mandshurica wood. The study found that F. mandshurica wood contains various odor-active compounds, including aromatics, aldehydes and ketones, esters, alcohols, and acids. The predominant odor impression of F. mandshurica wood is fragrant, followed by vinegar and antiseptic solution. The concentration of odor-active compounds decreased with an increase in temperature and relative humidity, but the air exchange rate to the loading factor had little effect. The total concentration and odor intensity of F. mandshurica wood increased with higher temperature and relative humidity, but decreased with a higher air exchange rate to the loading factor. Time was found to be the most effective factor in eliminating emissions. Based on the study's findings, it is recommended to accelerate the emission of F. mandshurica wood at 40 degrees C, 60% relative humidity, and a 1.0 m(3)center dot m(-2) h(-1) air exchange rate to loading factor ratio.

Subjective and objective sensory assessments of indoor air quality in college dormitories in Nanjing

Ling Xu et al.

Summary: Indoor air quality (IAQ) is crucial for human health and work efficiency. This study investigated the IAQ of 10 college dormitories using combined objective and subjective assessments. The results showed differences between different assessment approaches, highlighting the importance of combining objective and subjective methods. Furthermore, the audiovisual environment and odor assessments were correlated with residents' dissatisfaction and adverse symptoms.

Estimates of emission strengths of 43 VOCs in wintertime residential indoor environments, Beijing

Lihui Huang et al.

Summary: A study conducted in 8 urban residences in Beijing measured the indoor and outdoor concentrations of 43 VOCs, identifying 36 species with significant indoor sources. A model was developed to estimate the indoor emission strengths of these VOCs, ranking D-limonene, alpha-pinene, and styrene as the top contributors. Factors such as air exchange rate, indoor temperature, and humidity were found to have significant impacts on VOC emission strengths.

Molecular background of the undesired odor of polypropylene materials and insights into the sources of key odorants

Stephanie Frank et al.

Summary: By employing aroma extract dilution analysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, odor-active compounds in a standard polypropylene material were investigated. The study identified hex-1-en-3-one and 2-tert-butylphenol as key odorants, with increased odor activity in the presence of talcum and phenolic antioxidants in the material.

Enhanced atmospheric oxidation capacity and associated ozone increases during COVID-19 lockdown in the Yangtze River Delta

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: Aggressive air pollution control measures in China since 2013 have led to significant reductions in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) but an increase in ozone (O-3) concentrations. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in reduced economic activities, particularly in transportation, leading to over 50% decrease in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. Studies show that the O-3 increase in the Yangtze River Delta region is mainly attributed to the enhanced atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC).

Effect of chemical aging of monoterpene products on biogenic secondary organic aerosol concentrations

Brian T. Dinkelacker et al.

Summary: Developing a parameterization for biogenic SOA formation as a result of aging using recent laboratory results, the study applied this parameterization in PMCAMx over the eastern United States to simulate summertime conditions. The predictions showed modest increases in predicted domain average biogenic SOA, with alternative parameterization resulting in small increases. Model performance evaluation against measurements showed modest and mixed differences, consistent with the relatively small effect of the proposed parameterization on total organic aerosol levels.
