Gender differences in UV-induced skin inflammation, skin carcinogenesis and systemic damage

Qing-Yuan Zhong et al.

Summary: Male mice are more prone to skin tumor development induced by UV radiation compared to female mice, and they are more sensitive to UV irradiation, leading to greater oxidative stress and inflammatory damage.

The role of the retinoid receptor, RAR/RXR heterodimer, in liver physiology

Baixue Li et al.

Summary: Retinoic acid receptors (RARs) and retinoid X receptors (RXRs), activated by retinoids, play crucial roles in various biological processes such as embryo development, homeostasis, cell proliferation, differentiation and death. In liver physiology, RAR/RXR heterodimers regulate lipid and bile acid synthesis and metabolism, cholesterol transport in macrophages, and fibrogenesis in hepatic stellate cells. Specific genes carrying out these functions are regulated by RAR/RXR in liver cells, providing a mechanistic understanding of their roles in liver physiology. Still, detailed signaling mechanisms of RAR/RXR in regulating liver gene expression remain to be fully elucidated in future studies.

Study of Carnosine's effect on nude mice skin to prevent UV-A damage

Radrezza Silvia et al.

Summary: This study used a quantitative proteomic approach to analyze the effects of carnosine on the skin proteome of hairless mice exposed to UV-A radiation, finding that carnosine can prevent the alterations in skin proteome induced by UV-A. Functional pathways were disrupted in the skins of UV-A exposed hairless mice, with impaired mitochondrial function and metabolism, which were prevented by pre-treatment with carnosine.
