Putamen volume predicts real-time fMRI neurofeedback learning success across paradigms and neurofeedback target regions

Zhiying Zhao et al.

Summary: Real-time fMRI guided neurofeedback training is a noninvasive brain regulation technique with potential therapeutic applications, which can modulate functional brain alterations. By pooling data from three datasets, it was found that gray matter volume of the right putamen could predict learning success in neurofeedback training.

fMRI neurofeedback in the motor system elicits bidirectional changes in activity and in white matter structure in the adult human brain

Cassandra Sampaio-Baptista et al.

Summary: This study used fMRI neurofeedback to successfully alter white matter (WM) structure in the adult human brain, showing the relationship between brain activity modulation and WM microstructure. The results suggest that directionally modulating brain activity can affect changes in WM, potentially providing a new explanation for the previously observed learning-related WM changes.

Combined real-time fMRI and real time fNIRS brain computer interface (BCI): Training of volitional wrist extension after stroke, a case series pilot study

Avi K. Matarasso et al.

Summary: This study tested the feasibility of using rt-fMRI and rt-fNIRS as BCI neural feedback systems combined with motor learning for motor recovery in chronic severely impaired stroke survivors. The results showed that severely impaired stroke survivors engaged successfully in BCI systems to significantly improve motor function through spatially focused neurofeedback training. Further research is needed to explore the potential of using neural feedback for motor recovery in stroke survivors.

Predictors of real-time fMRI neurofeedback performance and improvement-A machine learning mega-analysis

Amelie Haugg et al.

Summary: The study found that conducting a pre-training no-feedback run before neurofeedback training and training patients instead of healthy participants significantly improved neurofeedback performance. This could be due to participants' familiarity with the neurofeedback setup and task, as well as patients having stronger motivation and more extensive clinical piloting. The results provide guidance for designing more efficient neurofeedback studies specifically for clinical interventions.
