Perinatal Depression: Challenges and Opportunities

Rada K. Dagher et al.

Summary: Perinatal depression (PND) is a major depressive episode during pregnancy or within 4 weeks after childbirth up to a year, with risk factors including stressful life events, history of depression, poor social support, unplanned pregnancies, poor relationship quality, abuse, and low socioeconomic status. It has negative effects on mothers' quality of life, intimate relationships, birth outcomes, breastfeeding likelihood, and long-term effects on children's cognitive and emotional development. No nationally representative study has examined socioeconomic and racial/ethnic differences in PND yet.

Summary: The phenomenon of female preponderance in depression does not mean that males do not have depression issues. Males are more likely to experience severe depression and suicidal behavior, but due to their difficulty in expressing negative emotions, symptoms of depression in males are often underdiagnosed and undertreated.

Refining Black men's depression measurement using participatory approaches: a concept mapping study

Leslie B. Adams et al.

Summary: Despite facing cumulative socioeconomic disadvantages and risk factors, Black Americans have a lower prevalence of depression compared to whites. Culturally informed depression measures and scale development techniques are needed to address the mental health burden of socially marginalized populations, particularly for Black men who may face challenges in timely identification of their mental health needs due to race- and gender-related factors. The study utilized concept mapping to identify how stakeholders conceptualize depressive symptoms in Black men, highlighting the need for culturally informed scale development in future research.
