Factors Associated with Stunted Growth in Children Under Five Years in Antananarivo, Madagascar and Bangui, Central African Republic

Pascale Vonaesch et al.

Summary: Our study found that maternal education, limited access to hygiene products, anemia, and low birth weight were associated with an increased risk of stunting. In Antananarivo, factors such as short maternal stature, household head not being the parents, diarrhea, and coughing were associated with a higher risk of stunting, while continuing breastfeeding was linked to a lower risk. In Bangui, previous severe undernutrition and skin infections were associated with a higher risk, while changes in diet during pregnancy were linked to a lower risk of stunting. Overall, the results suggest the importance of maternal education, antenatal care, iron supplementation, hygiene interventions, breastfeeding promotion (Antananarivo), and improved nutrition (Bangui) in combating stunting.

High prevalence of intestinal parasite infestations among stunted and control children aged 2 to 5 years old in two neighborhoods of Antananarivo, Madagascar

Azimdine Habib et al.

Summary: The study found a high prevalence of intestinal parasite infestations among children living in disadvantaged areas in Madagascar, with almost all individuals infected with at least one parasitic species. Children aged 4 to 5 and mothers with low educational levels were associated with infestation, while children drinking untreated water were linked to certain parasite infestations. Stunted children were also associated with certain parasite infections.
