Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway regulates cell proliferation but not muscle dedifferentiation nor apoptosis during sea cucumber intestinal regeneration

Miosotis Alicea-Delgado et al.

Summary: Regeneration is a vital developmental process where organisms recover tissue and organ components after injury or disease. The Wnt/β-catenin pathway plays a significant role in cell proliferation during intestine regeneration in sea cucumbers, as knocking down β-catenin transcripts reduces the number of proliferating cells but does not affect cell dedifferentiation or apoptosis. The development of an in vitro RNAi protocol is a crucial step in analyzing specific gene functions involved in echinoderm regeneration.

Transcriptomic analysis of early stages of intestinal regeneration in Holothuria glaberrima

David J. Quispe-Parra et al.

Summary: Echinoderms, including sea cucumbers, have impressive regenerative capabilities, especially in their ability to replace complex internal organs. This study focused on the molecular mechanisms and transcriptome analysis of intestinal regeneration in the sea cucumber Holothuria glaberrima, revealing diverse gene expression patterns and potential candidates for regenerative processes. Further research is needed to fully understand the complex cellular processes underlying regenerative responses in echinoderms.

FGF signalling plays similar roles in development and regeneration of the skeleton in the brittle star Amphiura filiformis

Anna Czarkwiani et al.

Summary: The study highlights the crucial role of the FGF signaling pathway in skeletogenesis and regeneration in brittle stars. Disruption of the FGF signaling pathway inhibits skeleton formation without affecting other key developmental processes. Differential transcriptome analysis reveals downregulation of differentiation genes rather than transcription factors, and the discovery of brittle star-specific differentiation genes through comparative gene analysis.

Summary: The painted urchin Lytechinus pictus has become a tractable model system for establishing transgenic sea urchin lines due to its amenability to long term laboratory culture. The first published genome of L. pictus exhibits high contiguity and will serve as a key resource for comparative functional genomics.
