Genome-wide analyses of light-regulated genes in Aspergillus nidulans reveal a complex interplay between different photoreceptors and novel photoreceptor functions

Zhenzhong Yu et al.

Summary: Fungi sense light of different wavelengths using blue-, green-, and red-light photoreceptors. While many genes in the model fungus Aspergillus nidulans are under light control, regulated through phytochrome and respond to specific wavelengths, there are also alternative red-light sensing systems and blue-light induced genes that may involve cryptochrome and phytochrome in the regulatory process. Phytochrome is essential for the response to blue light and plays a role in both blue- and red-light sensing pathways.

NEDD8 and ubiquitin ligation by cullin-RING E3 ligases

Kheewoong Baek et al.

Summary: In summary, RING E3s are the largest family of ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like protein ligases, typically working with E2 enzymes to transfer UB or UBL to specific substrates. Multifunctional RING E3s like cullin-RING ligase family have been shown to interact with various E2s to target distinct proteins or transfer different UBLs. The recent structures of cullin-RING ligases and their partner E2 enzymes reveal multimodal mechanisms directing these enzyme active sites to modify specific targets.
