Evolutionary analyses of visual opsin genes in frogs and toads: Diversity, duplication, and positive selection

Ryan K. Schott et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the visual systems of anurans and discover variations in visual opsin genes among different species that may be related to ecological needs. It was found that anurans consistently express four visual opsin genes, with considerable sequence variation and evidence of positive selection. Furthermore, the study also identified the first evidence of visual opsin duplication in an anuran species.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide users with a comprehensive, high-quality set of protein sequences annotated with functional information. Updates over the past two years have increased the number of sequences to approximately 190 million, with new methods to assess proteome completeness and quality. UniProtKB has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by expertly curating relevant entries and making them rapidly available through a dedicated portal.

Vitamin A1/A2 chromophore exchange: Its role in spectral tuning and visual plasticity

Joseph C. Corbo

Summary: Vertebrate rod and cone photoreceptors detect light through the outer segment, packed with light-sensitive molecules known as visual pigments. Conversion of A1 to A2 in the retina red-shifts the spectral sensitivity of visual pigments, allowing organisms to dynamically adjust to their environment's predominant light wavelengths. The use of A2 represents an important and widespread mechanism of sensory plasticity in a quarter of vertebrate species.

Eye-body allometry across biphasic ontogeny in anuran amphibians

Samuel J. Shrimpton et al.

Summary: The study found a high priority growth process of tadpole eyes near metamorphosis, indicating the prioritized development of eyes in tadpole stage. By studying the changes in eye size relative to body size in different species, significant impacts of different tadpole and adult ecologies on eye-body scaling were discovered.

Summary: The study explored the impact of metamorphosis on gene expression as organisms transition from immature stages to reproductive adults, finding that stage-biased gene expression was most pronounced between ecologically distinct larval stages and adult males. Even in the absence of metamorphosis, considerable stage-biased expression was observed among different larval stages, highlighting the role of ecology in shaping gene expression patterns.
