Symmetry-breaking of animal cytokinesis

Kenji Sugioka

Summary: Cytokinesis is a mechanism that separates dividing cells using a supramolecular structure called the contractile ring. The symmetry-breaking modes of cytokinesis, including unilateral cytokinesis, asymmetric cell division, and oriented cell division, play important roles in tissue patterning and morphogenesis. While the classic mechanism involves the geometric relationship between the mitotic spindle and cell cortex, emerging evidence suggests that a concerted flow of compressional cell-cortex materials can also drive spatial cytokinesis control.

In Vivo Silencing of Genes Coding for dTip60 Chromatin Remodeling Complex Subunits Affects Polytene Chromosome Organization and Proper Development in Drosophila melanogaster

Yuri Prozzillo et al.

Summary: The chromatin organization in Drosophila melanogaster is regulated by Tip60 chromatin remodeling complex (dTip60), DOM-A.C and DOM-B.C complexes, which share most subunits. This study combined genetics and cell biology to investigate the biological roles of these subunits in Drosophila melanogaster development.

Septin Remodeling During Mammalian Cytokinesis

Giulia Russo et al.

Summary: Cytokinesis involves the final separation of a mother cell into two daughter cells, with septins playing a crucial role in this process. Septins are recruited to the cleavage furrow early on and undergo constant rearrangement during cytokinetic progression, ultimately concentrating within the intercellular bridge. This concentration of septins at specific sites may support cytokinetic progression by interacting with actin, microtubules, and associated motors.

A cytoskeletal function for PBRM1 reading methylated microtubules

Menuka Karki et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the coordinated read-write activity of the epigenetic machinery involves the cytoskeleton, with PBRM1 regulating mitosis by binding microtubule methyl marks written by SETD2. This activity is crucial for normal mitosis, and disruptions can lead to genomic instability.

The ATPase SRCAP is associated with the mitotic apparatus, uncovering novel molecular aspects of Floating-Harbor syndrome

Giovanni Messina et al.

Summary: The study found that the SRCAP protein plays previously undetected roles in cell division, associating with components of the mitotic apparatus and regulating cytokinesis. Depletion of SRCAP affects both mitosis and cytokinesis, suggesting an evolutionarily conserved role in cell division independent of its chromatin regulation functions. This surprising discovery indicates that alterations in cell division caused by SRCAP mutations may contribute to the development of Floating-Harbor syndrome.
