Effect of external acetate on lactate-based carboxylate platform: Shifted lactate overloading limit and hydrogen co-production

Filip Brodowski et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the positive impact of external acetate on lactate-based chain elongation, leading to stable and efficient caproate production with concurrent hydrogen production. The addition of external acetate also helped maintain stable caproate production and induced previously unobserved hydrogen production even under continuous lactate overloading.

Development of an enhanced chain elongation process for caproic acid production from waste-derived lactic acid and butyric acid

Corine Orline Nzeteu et al.

Summary: The efficient production of caproic acid can be achieved by manipulating the inoculum and adjusting the concentration and ratio of lactic acid and butyric acid. A threshold concentration of lactic acid to butyric acid was found, above or below which the selectivity for caproic acid is reduced.

Chain elongators, friends, and foes

Pieter Candry et al.

Summary: The production of medium chain carboxylic acids from low-value organic waste and side-streams through chain elongation process is driven by anaerobic microbial activity. Mixed microbial communities are considered as biocatalysts due to the use of wastes as feedstocks. Understanding and steering these microbiomes are crucial for optimizing bioprocess performance.

Anaerobic caproate production on carbon chain elongation: Effect of lactate/butyrate ratio, concentration and operation mode

Shanbiao Xie et al.

Summary: By adjusting the ratio of butyrate to lactate and substrate concentrations, caproate production and electron efficiency can be enhanced. Inhibiting propionate production under low pH and low substrate concentration conditions is crucial. Semi-continuous operation could significantly increase caproate production compared to batch operation.

Production and extraction of medium chain carboxylic acids at a semi-pilot scale

Jose Maria Carvajal-Arroyo et al.

Summary: Microbial chain elongation can convert organic wastes and agroindustrial sidestreams into medium chain carboxylic acids (MCCAs), which can be used in various industries. Up-scaling production of MCCAs from thin stillage and separating them into oil at kilogram scale with a high MCCA content was achieved in this study. By decreasing the fermentation pH, the production rate of MCCAs and oil was doubled without the need for additional NaOH dosage.

Mixed Acid Fermentation of Carbohydrate-Rich Dairy Manure Hydrolysate

Abel T. Ingle et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the recovery of carbon from dairy manure fibers as medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) through various pretreatments. The decrystalization dilute acid pretreatment (DCDA) was found to be the most effective, producing carbohydrate-rich hydrolysates suitable for fermentation. Bioreactors fed with DCDA hydrolysates produced acetic acid and butyric acid as major end products, with transient production of MCFAs. Microbial community analysis revealed the involvement of lactic acid bacteria, Megasphaera, and Caproiciproducens in MCFA and C4 production.
