Impact of inoculation and turning for full-scale composting on core bacterial community and their co-occurrence compared by network analysis

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: Turning and inoculation in composting can significantly improve the efficiency of organic carbon degradation and reduce the abundance of potential pathogens, while also promoting the increase in relative abundance of certain bacteria. Network analysis showed that turning increased the number of indigenous core bacteria, while inoculation enhanced the interaction among key bacterial network.

Biochar regulates bacterial-fungal diversity and associated enzymatic activity during sheep manure composting

Yumin Duan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the coexistence of bacterial and fungal diversity and their correlation with enzymatic activity in response to biochar. The results showed that appropriate amendment of biochar enriched bacterial diversity but decreased fungal diversity. Biochar addition also enhanced enzymatic activities, with a more complex correlation with bacterial community than fungal community.

Zirconium hydroxide nanoparticle encapsulated magnetic biochar composite derived from rice residue: Application for As(III) and As(V) polluted water purification

Yaru Peng et al.

Summary: A novel zirconium hydroxide nanoparticle encapsulated magnetic biochar composite (ZBC) was synthesized for the adsorptive capture of As(III) and As(V) from aqueous solutions. ZBC showed satisfactory adsorption performances to As(III) and As(V) and could be easily recycled from contaminated waters. The adsorption of As(III) and As(V) on ZBC was mainly influenced by factors such as pH, ionic strength, and presence of coexisting ions.

The co-addition of biochar and manganese ore promotes nitrous oxide reduction but favors methane emission in sewage sludge composting

Shunxi Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of biochar and manganese ore on N2O and CH4 emissions during sewage sludge composting. The results show that the co-addition of biochar and manganese ore can effectively reduce global warming potential and total nitrogen loss. The main mechanism for reducing N2O emissions is identified as the inhibition of N2O generation during nitrification and denitrification processes. Meanwhile, the reduced CH4 emissions are achieved by inhibiting CH4 generation and promoting CH4 consumption.

Biochar combined with ferrous sulfate reduces nitrogen and carbon losses during agricultural waste composting and enhances microbial diversity

Peizhen Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of adding biochar, ferrous sulfate, and their combination during composting of pig manure mixed with straw to reduce carbon and nitrogen loss. The results showed that the combined treatment of biochar and ferrous sulfate significantly reduced emissions of NH3, N2O, CO2, and CH4 compared to the control group. This treatment also showed lower carbon and nitrogen losses and enhanced bacterial diversity and richness during composting.

Core bacterial community driven the conversion of fulvic acid components during composting with adding manganese dioxide

Haishi Qi et al.

Summary: The addition of MnO2 in composting promoted the formation of highly humified components in fulvic acid, while also increasing the relative abundance of core bacteria involved in FA transformation. Transforming bacteria were identified as key in converting FA components with low humification into highly humified components, demonstrating potential for environmental regulation.

Haiping Gu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the efficient degradation of phenanthrene in soil by bioaugmentation with Massilia sp. WF1 and Phanerochaete chrysosporium, especially in aqueous and autoclaved soil cultures. However, indigenous microorganisms in un-autoclaved soil play a dominant role and weaken the synergistic action of the co-culture. The findings provide scientific support for the bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the environment.
