Microscale characterisation of the time-dependent mechanical behaviour of brain white matter

Asad Jamal et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the time-dependent mechanical behavior of cerebral white matter and its relationship with local microstructural features. Experimental and simulation methods reveal a correlation between tissue mechanical response and axon orientation. The findings contribute significantly to predicting the mechanical properties of brain tissue.

A guide to the Michaelis-Menten equation: steady state and beyond

Bharath Srinivasan

Summary: The Michaelis-Menten equation is a cornerstone in enzymology, with its historical context and assumptions deserving closer examination. The mathematical curve rectangular hyperbola, representing the equation, is ubiquitous in biological systems. Researchers are striving to move past the steady-state approach and Michaelis-Menten equation towards more advanced kinetic analyses for a greater understanding of enzyme kinetics and catalysis.

Effect of Particle Size and Surface Charge on Nanoparticles Diffusion in the Brain White Matter

Tian Yuan et al.

Summary: A framework containing a stochastic geometric model of brain white matter (WM) and a mathematical particle tracing model was developed to investigate the relationship between particle size/surface charge of the nanoparticles (NPs) and their effective diffusion coefficients (D) in WM. The predictive capabilities of this method were validated using published experimental tests. For negatively charged NPs, both particle size and surface charge are positively correlated with D before reaching a size threshold. When Zeta potential (Zp) is less negative than -10 mV, the difference between NPs' D in WM and pure interstitial fluid (IF) is limited.

Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) modeling of bone marrow through trabecular bone structure under compression

A. A. R. Rabiatul et al.

Summary: The study investigated the fluid characteristic and mechanical properties of trabecular bone using the FSI approach, finding moderate correlations between permeability and porosity, surface area in both longitudinal and transverse orientations. Transverse orientation limits fluid flow through trabeculae due to high shear stress. Compared to the longitudinal orientation, transverse orientation exhibits higher permeability.

The Human Meniscus Behaves as a Functionally Graded Fractional Porous Medium under Confined Compression Conditions

Raphael Bulle et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates spatial variation in poromechanical parameters in human meniscus, with anisotropic and functionally graded porosity. A proposed poroelastic model, incorporating a fractional porous medium equation, can effectively describe fluid flow within the meniscus and identify associated parameters. Numerical simulations show differential fluid flux diffusion within different regions of the meniscus.

A unified modelling and simulation for coupled anomalous transport in porous media and its finite element implementation

O. Barrera

Summary: This paper presents a unified mathematical and computational framework for mechanics-coupled anomalous transport phenomena in porous media, discussing the impact of variable permeability on anomalous diffusion and the influence of a fractional pore pressure diffusion equation on diffusion transient phenomena. The research demonstrates the possibility of solving 3D consolidation problems of large scale structures by implementing the fractional pore pressure diffusion equation in a finite element framework with discretised fractional derivatives.

On the microstructural origin of brain white matter hydraulic permeability

Marco Vidotto et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the hydraulic permeability of two white matter areas and finds significant anisotropic behavior and permeability differences, indicating the importance of considering white matter heterogeneity in brain drug transport modeling. These findings not only contribute to drug delivery modeling but also shed light on interstitial transport mechanisms in the brain's extracellular space.
