Investigation into the interaction of biomass waste with industrial solid waste during co-pyrolysis and the synergetic effect of its char gasification

Peng Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interaction between waste cypress sawdust (WCS) and coal liquefaction residue (CLR) during co-pyrolysis. Both promoting and inhibiting effects were observed in the co-pyrolysis process. The gasification reactivity of co-pyrolysis char was better than that of individual WCS and CLR chars. The synergistic effect was most significant when the blending ratio of WCS to CLR was 3:1. In the gasification process, WCS contributed to the formation of a pore structure and promoted the diffusion and mass transfer of gasification agent. Additionally, alkali and alkaline earth metal species in WCS and iron bearing minerals in CLR catalyzed the gasification reaction, contributing to the synergistic effect.

Towards sustainable biomass gasification: Evolution of bagasse char characteristics throughout gasification

Hong Nam Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of char characteristics during bagasse gasification, highlighting the suitability of bagasse for gasification due to its low ash content, high heating value, and fast char conversion rate. The gasified chars exhibit high porosity and have the potential to be used as an alternative to expensive commercial activated carbons. The findings of this study are significant for addressing challenges in the industrialization of biomass gasification.

Deactivation mechanism of coal char gasification reactivity induced by cow manure biomass volatile-coal char interactions

Meng Ma et al.

Summary: Volatile-char interactions affect the chemical structure and reactivity of coal char, with O-containing functional groups playing an important role in char reactivity. The decrease in gasification reactivity due to volatile-char interactions is attributed to the decrease in aromatic C-O and C=O, and the increase in graphite carbon structures.

Low temperature co-pyrolysis of food waste with PVC-derived char: Products distributions, char properties and mechanism of bio-oil upgrading

Chuan Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of char and bio-oil derived from MSW, FW, and PVC feedstocks through low temperature pyrolysis. The results showed the temperature for PVC transformation, decomposition of oxygenated carbon groups on char surface, and the impact of using PVC-derived char as a catalyst on bio-oil production. Active functional groups and pore structures were formed through synergistic pyrolysis.

Investigations on NO reduction with biomass char: Char structural changes during the heat treatment in N2 and subsequent NO/O2 gasification

Nan Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the reduction of NO with biomass char in relation to its structural properties. The results showed significant differences in char structural changes between NO and O-2 reaction, with new O-containing groups formed during both reactions. It was proposed that the reaction channel of NO could be blocked by oxygen molecules surrounding the carbon during NO/O-2 reaction.

Structural and chemical changes of sludge derived pyrolysis char prepared under different process temperatures

Jaroslav Mosko et al.

Summary: Pyrolysis of sewage sludge at 400-800 degrees C showed that increasing temperature led to higher phosphate and metaphosphate content, and lower reduced P species content; higher temperature also increased sulfide content and decreased sulfate and sulfite content; the effect on nitrogen species was minimal. Raman spectroscopy and NMR revealed significant contribution of graphite and (poly) aromatic hydrocarbons to the organic structure of sludge-chars.

Char structural evolution characteristics and its correlation with reactivity during the heterogeneous NO reduction in a micro fluidized bed reaction analyzer: The influence of reaction residence time

Lei Chen et al.

Summary: Under simulated flue gas conditions, different chars showed varying reactivity towards NO reduction, with acid-soaking treatment enhancing char structures. Increased residence time led to higher graphitization degree of chars, and transformations in nitrogen species were observed.

Fossil or bioenergy? Global fuel market trends

Diana Londono-Pulgarin et al.

Summary: The research focused on the development of power production and its consumption, particularly highlighting the trend of biomass energy in relation to other energy sources. By juxtaposing specialists' opinions with statistical data and hypotheses, the study made qualitative arguments to predict long-term tendencies, comparing alternative energy sources, ecological policies, and geopolitical facts. Two key patterns were identified: the prevalence of fossil fuel use and the strengthening of alternative power sources towards achieving sustainable development goals.
