Cadmium and lead concentrations in yerba mate leaves from agroforestry and plantation systems: An international survey in South America

Ederlan Magri et al.

Summary: Legislation concerning cadmium and lead levels in yerba mate production has raised concerns in the industry. An international survey found correlations between available cadmium in soil and yerba mate leaves, as well as between cadmium and zinc foliar. While some leaf samples exceeded legal thresholds for cadmium and lead, intake estimates from yerba mate infusion were found to be low for consumer health.

ICP-MS Assessment of Essential and Toxic Trace Elements in Foodstuffs with Different Geographic Origins Available in Romanian Supermarkets

Cezara Voica et al.

Summary: This study found that the daily intake of chromium and copper exceeded the recommended dietary allowances in many food items, and consuming nickel and copper through seeds and fruits could have adverse health effects. Additionally, a strong correlation between copper and arsenic was established. The cancer risk index for all elements investigated was within safe limits, indicating that lifetime consumption does not increase the risk of carcinogens.
