Increasing fengycin production by strengthening the fatty acid synthesis pathway and optimizing fermentation conditions

Wei Tan et al.

Summary: Bacillus subtilis 168 was engineered as a cell factory for fengycin production by activating its dormant native fengycin synthetase. Genetically modified strain 168DS showed an initial fengycin production of 10.40 mg/L in flask culture, which increased to 130.10 mg/L through a combination of gene overexpression and optimization of fermentation conditions. This strategy provides a path to increase industrial production and reduce the price of fengycin.

Effect of metal ions on lipopeptide secretion from Bacillus subtilis strain FJAT-4: Negative regulation by Ca2+

Meichun Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of metal ions on lipopeptide production by Bacillus subtilis strain FJAT-4 and the negative regulation mechanism by Ca2+. Ca2+ at a high concentration (45 mM) was found to decrease lipopeptide production by downregulating the expression of genes encoding lipopeptide synthetases, possibly through the regulation of three two-component signal-transduction systems ResD/ResE, PhoP/PhoR, and DegU/DegS.

Study on the Biocontrol Potential of Antifungal Peptides Produced by Bacillus velezensis against Fusarium solani That Infects the Passion Fruit Passiflora edulis

Caicheng Wang et al.

Summary: The study isolated a bacterium identified as Bacillus velezensis, which produced an antifungal peptide (BVAP) with inhibitory effects against Fusarium solani, the pathogen causing basal stem rot in passion fruit. BVAP showed superior antifungal activity compared to chemical fungicides, potentially by increasing mycelial membrane permeability and inducing abnormal cellular accumulation to achieve biocontrol against the pathogen.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens-Derived Lipopeptide Biosurfactants Inhibit Biofilm Formation and Expression of Biofilm-Related Genes of Staphylococcus aureus

Karolina Englerova et al.

Summary: Biosurfactants produced by diverse microorganisms, including Bacillus, possess antibiofilm effects which can be potentially used to combat Staphylococcus aureus infections. Specific genes were identified indicating the production of lipopeptides (LPs) that significantly reduced biofilm formation and gene expression related to biofilm. These findings suggest a promising therapeutic application for LPs in preventing S. aureus biofilm infections.

Enhanced ascomycin production in Streptomyces hygroscopicus var. ascomyceticus by employing polyhydroxybutyrate as an intracellular carbon reservoir and optimizing carbon addition

Pan Wang et al.

Summary: Polyhydroxybutyrate metabolism serves as an intracellular carbon reservoir for ascomycin production, with accumulation during abundant carbon sources and depolymerization for precursor biosynthesis during carbon source insufficiency. Co-overexpression of synthesis and decomposition genes enhances biomass and antibiotic yield, offering a new strategy for improving secondary metabolite production.
