Strategies to improve reproductive rate and lamb survival can address the suboptimal reproductive performance of maiden ewes.

Toxoplasma gondii is not an important contributor to poor reproductive performance of primiparous ewes from southern Australia: a prospective cohort study

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of Toxoplasma gondii infection on the reproductive performance of primiparous ewes in southern Australia. The results showed a low frequency of detection of T. gondii seroconversion during gestation and a low frequency of seropositivity to T. gondii, suggesting that toxoplasmosis was not a major contributor to reproductive losses in primiparous ewes on farms located over a wide geographical area in southern Australia.

Ovine abortion and stillbirth investigations in Australia

Summary: The study analyzed data from 529 investigations on ovine abortion or stillbirth in four states of Australia from 2000 to 2018. The results showed that 81% of investigations involved infectious abortion, with Campylobacter spp., Listeria spp., and Toxoplasma gondii being the most common abortigenic pathogens. Investigations that included placental tissue samples were more likely to have an aetiological diagnosis.

Chlamydia pecorum-Induced Arthritis in Experimentally and Naturally Infected Sheep

Summary: Chlamydia pecorum is an intracellular pathogen that can infect a wide range of animals, causing arthritis and pyelitis. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry assessments on tissues from sheep experimentally or naturally infected with C. pecorum revealed inflammatory lesions in synovial tissues and renal pelvis, indicating hematogeneous spread of the pathogen leading to arthritis in lambs.
