Simulations of 60Fe entrained in ejecta from a near-Earth supernova: effects of observer motion

Evgenii Chaikin et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found live radioactive Fe-60 in deep-ocean samples, Antarctic snow, lunar regolith, and cosmic rays, indicating the possible involvement of one or multiple near-Earth supernova explosions in the formation of the Local Bubble. A simulation exploring the interaction between isolated supernovae and the interstellar medium suggests that the intensity and duration of Fe-60 accretion depend on the density of the interstellar medium and the trajectory of the Solar system.

The best place and time to live in the Milky Way

R. Spinelli et al.

Summary: The study assessed the habitability of the Milky Way throughout its cosmic history and identified the safest places and epochs within the Galaxy. It confirmed the hypothesis that a long gamma-ray burst played a leading role in the late Ordovician mass-extinction event.

Could the Local Cavity be an Irregularly Shaped Stromgren Sphere?*

Jeffrey L. Linsky et al.

Summary: The Local Cavity is an old supernova bubble heated by supernova shocks, with fully ionized hydrogen and mostly warm plasma near the Galactic plane. It contains a small percentage of hot gas and was likely formed by encounters with recent supernovae. The partially ionized Local Interstellar Cloud and nearby warm interstellar clouds were likely formed through compression and recombination of hydrogen due to encounters with regions of weak magnetic fields during supernova shocks.

The Discovery of a Low-energy Excess in Cosmic-Ray Iron: Evidence of the Past Supernova Activity in the Local Bubble

M. J. Boschini et al.

Summary: The AMS-02 has delivered high-quality measurements of cosmic-ray species and recently published a surprise spectrum of Fe-26. Analysis of the new results, combined with other data sources, suggests the presence of a local source of low-energy cosmic rays. This discovery extends recent findings of radioactive Fe-60 deposits in terrestrial and lunar samples as well as in cosmic rays.

60Fe and 244Pu deposited on Earth constrain the r-process yields of recent nearby supernovae

A. Wallner et al.

Summary: By studying samples of Fe-60 and Pu-244 in Pacific Ocean crust, researchers have detected two influxes of 60Fe to Earth in the last 10 million years, accompanied by lower quantities of Pu-244. The similar Pu-244/Fe-60 influx ratios of both events suggest that supernovae explosions may not be the primary source of r-process nucleosynthesis.

3D MHD astrospheres: applications to IRC-10414 and Betelgeuse

D. M-A Meyer et al.

Summary: This study employs 3D MHD simulations to investigate the circumstellar medium of runaway M-type red supergiant stars, finding that when the direction of ISM flow and magnetization differs by a few degrees, the bow shock is stabilized and the structure becomes smoother. The simulations fit well observations of the astrospheres of several runaway red supergiant stars.
