Gaia early DR3 systemic motions of Local Group dwarf galaxies and orbital properties with a massive Large Magellanic Cloud

G. Battaglia et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively determines the systemic proper motions of 74 dwarf galaxies in the Local Group based on Gaia early data release 3, and the results are publicly available. Using a Bayesian methodology, the analysis takes into account the location of stars on different charts, revealing potential associations between some galaxies and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The study also delves into the orbital properties of galaxies, particularly noting the impact of the infall of a massive LMC on their trajectories.

Measuring the Milky Way mass distribution in the presence of the LMC

Lilia Correa Magnus et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to compensate for the perturbations caused by the interaction between the Milky Way and its largest satellite, the Large Magellanic Cloud. By computing the past trajectory of the satellite and integrating the orbits of tracer objects back in time, the authors are able to estimate the mass of the Milky Way more accurately.

Uncertainties associated with the backward integration of dwarf satellites using simple parametric potentials

Richard D'Souza et al.

Summary: The study found that using simple symmetric parametric forms of the potential fail to capture the complexities and inhomogeneities of the true potential experienced by the subhaloes. Specifically, modeling a recent massive accretion like that of the LMC as a sum of two spherical parametric potentials leads to substantial errors in the recovered parameters of the orbits.

Gaia Early Data Release 3 The astrometric solution

L. Lindegren et al.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 provides full astrometric data for 1.468 billion sources, including 585 million with five-parameter solutions and 882 million with six parameters, as well as mean positions at J2016.0 for an additional 344 million sources. Five-parameter solutions are generally more accurate and available for 93% of sources brighter than the 17th magnitude, with median uncertainties of 0.02-0.03 mas for parallax and proper motion at G = 9-14, and around 0.5 mas at G = 20. Extensive characterization of the solutions' statistical properties is provided, including the estimated angular power spectrum of parallax bias from quasars.

Gaia Early Data Release 3 Summary of the contents and survey properties

A. G. A. Brown et al.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 is the early installment of the third data release from the Gaia project, providing astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, along with radial velocities from Gaia DR2. The data processing precision and homogeneity have significantly improved compared to the previous version, with additional information on celestial bodies and an updated celestial reference frame.

Kinematics of Antlia 2 and Crater 2 from the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S 5)

Alexander P. Ji et al.

Summary: New spectroscopic observations of Antlia 2 and Crater 2, part of the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey, reveal an increase in confirmed member stars and velocity gradients consistent with tidal disruption simulations. A revised metallicity estimation for Antlia 2 suggests ongoing substantial stellar mass loss despite previous overestimation. Current dynamical models, requiring Antlia 2 to have lost over 90% of its stars, are in tension with the updated metallicity. Overall, the kinematic measurements support a tidal disruption scenario for the origin of these dwarf spheroidal galaxies.

The role of faint population III supernovae in forming CEMP stars in ultra-faint dwarf galaxies

Myoungwon Jeon et al.

Summary: The majority of CEMP-no stars in observed UFDs and the MW halo can be explained by Pop III SNe with normal explosion energy and Pop II enrichment, but faint SNe might also be needed to produce CEMP-no stars with higher carbon abundance. Despite efforts to create CEMP-no stars with high carbon ratios, it remains challenging to reproduce those with extreme levels of carbon abundance observed in the MW halo and UFDs.

Breaking beta: a comparison of mass modelling methods for spherical systems

J. Read et al.

Summary: In this study, four different mass modelling methods were applied to mock data for spherical stellar systems, showing good recovery of density and velocity anisotropy for isotropic and tangentially anisotropic data, but facing challenges with radially anisotropic data. Only methods incorporating shape information of the velocity distribution function were able to break the degeneracy between the density profile and the velocity anisotropy for line-of-sight data, while including proper motion data led to further improvements in recovering both radial density and velocity anisotropy profiles.

Gaia EDR3 Proper Motions of Milky Way Dwarfs. I. 3D Motions and Orbits

Hefan Li et al.

Summary: Using Gaia Early Data Release 3, researchers estimated the proper motions of 46 dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way, finding that these galaxies are highly concentrated near their pericenters rather than apocenters. A significant number of satellites show orbital poles indicating they orbit along the vast polar structure, with most co-orbiting in a direction shared by the Magellanic Clouds.

Born in a Pair (?): Pisces II and Pegasus III*

Alessia Garofalo et al.

Summary: The authors studied variable stars in the Milky Way ultra-faint dwarf satellites Pisces II and Pegasus III using time-series photometry data collected with the Large Binocular Telescope. They identified RRab stars, SX Phoenicis stars, and stars with uncertain classifications in both galaxies. The study suggests that these galaxies may contain a dominant old stellar population with metallicity variations, as supported by color-magnitude diagrams and spectroscopic analysis.

Determining the full satellite population of a Milky Way-mass halo in a highly resolved cosmological hydrodynamic simulation

Robert J. J. Grand et al.

Summary: The study reveals that there are five times as many satellite galaxies in high resolution simulations compared to standard resolution simulations, leading to a more centrally concentrated radial distribution of satellites. Additionally, the simulation successfully forms ultra-faint galaxies and reproduces the stellar velocity dispersion, half-light radii, and V-band luminosities of observed Milky Way and Local Group dwarf galaxies across six orders of magnitude in luminosity.

Highly r-process enhanced stars in ultra-faint dwarf galaxies

Myoungwon Jeon et al.

Summary: The study shows that the formation of r-process enhanced metal-poor stars in ultra-faint dwarf galaxies is possible but rare, potentially due to individually prolific neutron star merger events. The most crucial factor in determining the formation of these stars in ultra-faint dwarf galaxies is how quickly subsequent stars can be formed from r-process enriched gas. The study demonstrates that it takes between 10 and 100 million years to form the first and second bursts of these stars, maintaining the required high abundance ratios of [Eu/Fe] > 1 over this period.

Eridanus II: A Fossil from Reionization with an Off-center Star Cluster

Joshua D. Simon et al.

Summary: This study presents deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry of ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Eridanus II, revealing the star formation history and structure of the galaxy's cluster. The research suggests the presence of a small dark matter core in Eri II and shows that star formation in the galaxy may have been influenced by reionization. The study also demonstrates that the cluster is offset from the center of the galaxy and shares a similar stellar population with Eri II.
