The LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey V. Second data release

T. W. Shimwell et al.

Summary: This article presents the data release of LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey, which covers 27% of the northern sky with 120-168 MHz images. The catalogue includes 4,396,228 radio sources, most of which have never been detected at radio wavelengths before. The images were derived from extensive and automated data processing, including correction for instrumental properties and ionospheric distortions. The release of Stokes I, Q, U, and V images, as well as calibrated uv-data, enables the thorough scientific exploitation of this unique dataset.

The eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) LOFAR view of brightest cluster galaxies and AGN feedback

T. Pasini et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the radio emissions of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in eFEDS clusters and groups and found that BCGs with radio-loud active galactic nucleus (AGN) are more likely to be located close to the cluster center. There is a clear relation between the X-ray luminosity of the cluster and the radio power of the BCG. The study also revealed a balance between the radiative losses of the intracluster medium and the heating provided by the central AGN.

The eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) Galaxy clusters and groups in disguise

E. Bulbul et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) and aims to demonstrate the telescope's ability to detect clusters and groups. The researchers identify 346 galaxy clusters and groups in the redshift range of 0.1 < z < 1.3 and examine their properties to understand selection biases. They find that most clusters and groups in the point source sample are underluminous and compact compared to the extent-selected sample. They also develop a method for identifying clusters and groups with active galactic nuclei (AGN) and successfully apply it to the current point source catalog.

The contribution of discrete sources to the sky temperature at 144 MHz

M. J. Hardcastle et al.

Summary: Recent research on the extragalactic radio background has focused on the contribution of known discrete source population at low frequencies, with new data from the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) providing constraints on this contribution. Despite the new data, known sources can only explain around a quarter of the estimated extragalactic sky temperature at LOFAR frequencies.

Radio halos in a mass-selected sample of 75 galaxy clusters: II. Statistical analysis

V Cuciti et al.

Summary: This study utilizes radio and X-ray data analysis to investigate the relationship between the radio properties of galaxy clusters and their mass and dynamical state. The findings show that radio halos are predominantly found in merging clusters and their radio power correlates with the mass of the host clusters. Additionally, cluster dynamics play a significant role in the radio luminosity and emissivity of radio halos.

The LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey: Deep Fields Data Release 1: I. Direction-dependent calibration and imaging

C. Tasse et al.

Summary: The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) is an ideal instrument for deep extragalactic surveys due to its large field of view and sensitivity to both large-scale and compact emission. However, synthesizing thermal noise limited maps at full resolution remains challenging due to the complexity of the low-frequency sky and direction dependent effects. This paper introduces a new calibration and imaging pipeline to produce high fidelity, high dynamic range images with LOFAR High Band Antenna data while addressing computational efficiency and robustness against unmodeled radio emission.

Summary: The study explores the X-ray, optical, and radio properties of the member clusters of a newly discovered supercluster. It shows the potential of eROSITA to probe large-scale structures and their properties, with the ability to detect a large number of superclusters for statistical studies. Follow-up observations reveal two new radio relics and a radio halo resulting from major merger activity in the system.

Physical insights from the spectrum of the radio halo in MACS J0717.5+3745

K. Rajpurohit et al.

Summary: New observations of the merging galaxy cluster MACS J0717.5+3745 show that its radio halo is more extended than previously thought, with a steep spectrum and significant scattering in spectral index maps. The correlation between radio and X-ray brightness strengthens at higher frequencies, while the spectral index shows a significant anticorrelation with X-ray brightness. These findings support turbulent reacceleration models and suggest a turbulent kinetic pressure of up to 10% in the intracluster medium.

LOFAR detection of a low-power radio halo in the galaxy cluster Abell 990

D. N. Hoang et al.

Summary: The paper reports the detection of a radio halo in the galaxy cluster Abell 990 with low radio power and low X-ray luminosity, making it one of the least luminous systems known to host a radio halo. This opens the possibility of detecting more haloes in poorly explored less massive clusters with low-frequency telescopes.

Nonthermal phenomena in the center of Abell 1775: An 800 kpc head-tail, revived fossil plasma and slingshot radio halo

A. Botteon et al.

Summary: The study focused on the central region of the galaxy cluster Abell 1775, analyzing the connection between thermal and nonthermal components. Results showed spiral-like patterns in X-ray surface brightness, an arc-shaped cold front in the intra-cluster medium, and a slingshot gas tail scenario. This indicated ongoing particle reacceleration on different scales in the cluster's center.

Galaxy Clusters from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. I. Cluster Detection

Hu Zou et al.

Summary: The study identified approximately 540,432 galaxy clusters with a redshift less than or equal to 1 based on the DESI legacy imaging surveys, using a calibrated richness-mass relation derived from observations. The median redshift and mass of the detected clusters were about 0.53 and 1.23 x 10^14 solar masses, respectively. Comparison with clusters identified using Sloan Digital Sky Survey data showed that most clusters, especially those with high richness, were recognized. The catalog will be used for further statistical studies on galaxy clusters and environmental effects on galaxy evolution.
