Pulsations in main sequence OBAF-type stars

J. De Ridder et al.

Summary: This study analyzes intermediate- to high-mass main sequence pulsating stars using Gaia DR3 data, revealing their oscillation characteristics and variability types, and confirming the relationship between empirical instability strips and theoretical predictions. The study also uncovers the presence of rotationally modulated variables and fast rotating gravity-mode pulsators. Additionally, an extensive period-luminosity relation for ffi Sct stars is derived.

Predictions for Gravity-mode Periods and Surface Abundances in Intermediate-mass Dwarfs from Shear Mixing and Radiative Levitation

Joey S. G. Mombarg et al.

Summary: Recent study presented new MESA stellar models with improvements in computing efficiency and shear mixing in radiative envelopes, which allows for mode trapping in chemical mixing profiles. Predictions also show correlations between N/C and C/O abundance ratios with stellar age, observable with precision around 0.1 dex with accurate age estimates.

Seismic modelling of a very young SPB star - KIC 8264293

Wojciech Szewczuk et al.

Summary: In this study, we conducted a thorough seismic analysis of MC 8264293, a fast-rotating B-type pulsator observed by the Kepler satellite. By fitting the period spacing and considering the position of the star in the HR diagram, we constrained the internal structure and physical parameters of the star. We found that the star is very young and has not yet left the zero-age main sequence. The star's photometric variability is mainly due to its pulsations in high-order g modes, as well as the fluctuation in its circumstellar disc.

Stellar labels for hot stars from low-resolution spectra I. The HOTPAYNE method and results for 330 000 stars from LAMOST DR6

Maosheng Xiang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on determining stellar labels from low-resolution survey spectra of hot stars, particularly OBA stars with T-eff greater than or similar to 7500 K. The authors explore the theoretical information content of such spectra and show that precise estimates are possible for various stellar labels. The study also presents the distribution of vsin i for hot stars, as well as the limitations of the underlying models in terms of abundance estimates.

Modeling overcontact binaries I. The effect of tidal deformation

M. Fabry et al.

Summary: This study aims to consistently model overcontact binary stars using a one-dimensional stellar evolution code. The results show that ignoring rotation in deformed detached binaries can result in a radius discrepancy of up to 5%, while the difference between tidal deformation models and single-star rotating models is relatively small at 1%.

High-mass pulsators in eclipsing binaries observed using TESS

John Southworth et al.

Summary: Pulsations and binarity are common features of massive stars. The study of pulsating massive stars in eclipsing binary systems has great potential for constraining stellar structure and evolution theory. By analyzing the TESS light curves of known eclipsing binaries containing high-mass stars, we have discovered 18 objects that show intrinsic variability. We have obtained physical properties of several systems and removed the effects of binarity to obtain residual light curves suitable for asteroseismic analysis. We have identified multiple pulsation signatures in these residual light curves and obtained precise mass and radius measurements for some objects. The large number of pulsating eclipsing systems we have found makes it feasible to use asteroseismology to constrain the interior physics of a large sample of massive stars for the first time.

Probing the interior physics of stars through asteroseismology

C. Aerts

Summary: High-precision brightness measurements collected over years using telescopes in space have enabled astronomers to study the physics of stellar interiors through nonradial oscillations. The field of asteroseismology has provided new insights into how stars rotate and evolve chemically. Data-driven space asteroseismology has significantly improved computer models of star evolution, which are crucial for various research fields in space science and have potential applications in the search for extraterrestrial life and studies of supernova progenitors.

Estimating Distances from Parallaxes. V. Geometric and Photogeometric Distances to 1.47 Billion Stars in Gaia Early Data Release 3

C. A. L. Bailer-Jones et al.

Summary: Stellar distances are essential in astrophysics, and the publication of 1.47 billion stellar parallaxes from Gaia significantly contributes to this field. Despite challenges with faint or distant stars, a probabilistic approach using a three-dimensional model of the Galaxy has been developed to estimate geometric and photogeometric distances. Photogeometric estimates generally show higher accuracy and precision compared to geometric distances, especially for stars with poor parallaxes, and are provided in a publicly available catalog.

Variability of newly identified B-type stars observed by Kepler

Wojciech Szewczuk et al.

Summary: Recent re-determination of stellar atmospheric parameters during the Kepler mission has led to the discovery of more Kepler B-type stars. These stars exhibit pulsational variability, with high-order g modes being dominant and some low-order p/g modes also present. Patterns in the oscillation spectra associated with period spacings resulting from the asymptotic nature of the detected pulsational modes have been identified. The observed oscillation characteristics have been tentatively compared to predictions from linear non-adiabatic computations of stellar pulsations, with the effects of rotation on frequency values and mode instability considered for high-order g modes using the traditional approximation.

Probing the temperature gradient in the core boundary layer of stars with gravito-inertial modes: The case of KIC 7760680

M. Michielsen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the thermal and chemical structure in the near-core region of stars with a convective core using gravito-inertial modes, focusing on the B-type star KIC 7760680 rotating at a quarter of its critical rotation velocity. The results suggest that period spacings of modes with consecutive radial order offer a better diagnostic for asteroseismic modelling of stars with high-order gravito-inertial modes, with simpler models without convective boundary mixing being statistically preferred for KIC 7760680.

A homogeneous spectroscopic analysis of a Kepler legacy sample of dwarfs for gravity-mode asteroseismology

Sarah Gebruers et al.

Summary: The study aims to create an optimal sample for joint asteroseismic and spectroscopic stellar modeling using high-resolution spectroscopy, and to provide additional observational input for modeling the envelope layers of non-radially pulsating dwarfs. The results suggest overestimation of metallicity for F-type dwarfs in the literature, and a hint of deep mixing in B-type stars based on C and O abundance ratios.

Internal mixing of rotating stars inferred from dipole gravity modes

May G. Pedersen et al.

Summary: Observations of 26 rotating stars with masses between 3 and 10 solar masses reveal a wide range of internal mixing levels, with models incorporating radially stratified mixing profiles showing the best asteroseismic performance. This study provides observational guidance for three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of transport processes in the deep interiors of stars, based on gravity modes probing the stars' deep interiors near the convective core. The internal mixing levels in the analyzed stars are unexpectedly varied and are best reproduced with models incorporating radially stratified mixing profiles.

Results show that the majority of these stars reveal direct non-linear resonances based on the largest-amplitude modes, making them prime targets for non-linear asteroseismic modeling.

A β Cephei pulsator and a changing orbital inclination in the high-mass eclipsing binary system VV Orionis

John Southworth et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the high-mass eclipsing binary system VV Ori using photometry data from the TESS satellite. The primary star shows beta Cephei pulsations while the secondary star is possibly a slowly pulsating B star. The analysis detects 51 significant oscillation frequencies, indicating tidal perturbations, and reveals that the orbital inclination is decreasing, possibly due to gravitational interactions with a third body.
