Planetary core formation via multispecies pebble accretion

G. Andama et al.

Summary: In the classical picture of pebble-based core growth, planetary cores grow through accretion of single pebble species, reaching a pebble isolation mass that halts core growth. Recent hydrodynamic simulations show that core growth rates and final core masses are sensitive to parameters like turbulent viscosity and pebble size. Accretion of multiple pebble species can lead to fast growth of planetary cores, potentially explaining heavy element abundance in Jupiter, massive cores of extrasolar planets, disc rings and gaps at wider orbits, and early formation of planetary bodies.

Super stellar abundances of alkali metals suggest significant migration for hot Jupiters

Tom O. Hands et al.

Summary: The overabundance of alkali metals in the atmospheres of hot gas giants may be due to excess accretion of oxygen-poor, refractory-rich material from within the snow line. This phenomenon cannot be explained by in situ formation, but rather requires external formation followed by inward disc-driven migration.

Water observed in the atmosphere of τ Bootis Ab with CARMENES/CAHA

Rebecca K. Webb et al.

Summary: Characterizing the atmospheres of hot Jupiters is crucial for understanding their formation and migration, but many questions remain about the chemical and physical properties of these atmospheres. In this study, we confirm the presence of water vapor in the non-transiting hot Jupiter tau Bootis Ab using high-resolution NIR CARMENES spectrograph. We also measure various parameters of the planet and find no evidence of additional minor species in the atmosphere. Our findings contradict recent observations and call for further investigations to resolve these discrepancies.

Summary: With the launch of JWST, more precise data on exoplanets will be obtained, but understanding exoplanets also requires knowledge of their host stars in the planet-star formation context. The chemical abundance profiles of 17 FGK stars analyzed in this study provide insights into the composition and formation of planetary systems.

Probing the impact of varied migration and gas accretion rates for the formation of giant planets in the pebble accretion scenario

N. Ndugu et al.

Summary: The migration speed of growing planets determines their final orbital position, primarily based on planetary mass. Factors such as disc viscosities, dynamical torques, and gas accretion from the horseshoe region influence planet migration. Taking these effects into account can slow down inward migration and allow the formation of cold Jupiters closer to the water ice line region.

Tracing the Formation History of Giant Planets in Protoplanetary Disks with Carbon, Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Sulfur

D. Turrini et al.

Summary: This study explores how the abundances of C and O can limit the formation pathways of giant planets and investigates the impact of wider formation environments through simulations and compositional models. Although the C/O ratio provides limited insight, combining nitrogen and sulfur ratios can break degeneracies in the formation and migration tracks of giant planets. Using elemental ratios normalized to stellar ratios can provide additional information on the nature of giant planets.

A solar C/O and sub-solar metallicity in a hot Jupiter atmosphere

Michael R. Line et al.

Summary: Measurements of the atmospheric carbon and oxygen relative to hydrogen in hot Jupiters provide insights into their formation location and migration. Hot Jupiters with C/O ratios near 1 and subsolar metallicities may have migrated post disk-dissipation, while those with C/O < 0.5 and super-solar metallicities may have migrated through the disk before dissipation.

Dry or water world? How the water contents of inner sub-Neptunes constrain giant planet formation and the location of the water ice line

Bertram Bitsch et al.

Summary: In the pebble accretion scenario, the position of growing planetary cores relative to the water ice line plays a key role in determining the water content of inner planets. Pebbles blocked outside the water ice line result in a dry inner disk, while those blocked inside release water vapor, leading to wetter inner planets.

Puffed-up Edges of Planet-opened Gaps in Protoplanetary Disks. I. Hydrodynamic Simulations

Jiaqing Bi et al.

Summary: Dust gaps and rings are commonly found in bright protoplanetary disks, with some sharp dust rings indicating settlement of sub-millimeter-sized dust grains. Planets massive enough to open gas gaps can stir small dust grains to high disk elevations, attributed to meridional gas flows induced by the planet. Three-dimensional simulations are crucial for obtaining the vertical distribution of sub-millimeter-sized grains around gas gaps opened by massive planets.

Five carbon- and nitrogen-bearing species in a hot giant planet's atmosphere

Paolo Giacobbe et al.

Summary: Observations of hot Jupiter HD 209458b indicate the presence of various molecules in its atmosphere, including water, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, methane, ammonia, and acetylene. These findings suggest a carbon-rich chemistry with a higher carbon-to-oxygen ratio than the solar value, potentially related to planet formation and migration scenarios. This challenges the assumption of solar-like and oxygen-rich compositions in hot Jupiters.

How drifting and evaporating pebbles shape giant planets I. Heavy element content and atmospheric C/O

Aaron David Schneider et al.

Summary: Recent observations of extrasolar gas giants indicate high C/O ratios and heavy element contents in planetary atmospheres, influenced by inward drifting and evaporating pebbles. The composition of planetary gas atmosphere is dominated by the accretion of vapor from evaporating pebbles, allowing giant planets to harbor large heavy element contents. Additionally, planets forming farther from the central star tend to have higher C/O ratios due to the evaporation of methane-rich pebbles, in contrast to planets formed in the outer disk which harbor a smaller heavy element content.

How drifting and evaporating pebbles shape giant planets II. Volatiles and refractories in atmospheres

Summary: Studies of extrasolar gas giants will provide insights into the composition of planetary atmospheres, linking it to planet formation history. Drifting and evaporating pebbles enrich the gas phase in the disk, influencing the chemical composition of growing and migrating gas giants. Accretion of pebbles and gas enriches the gas-accreting planets in volatiles compared to refractories, posing constraints on planet formation theories and making it an important target for future observations.

A diffuse core in Saturn revealed by ring seismology

Christopher R. Mankovich et al.

Summary: Historically, the best constraints on the internal structures of giant planets have come from measurements of their gravity fields, which are mostly sensitive to the planet's outer regions. However, studies of Saturn's rings have detected waves driven by pulsation modes within the planet, offering independent seismic probes of Saturn's interior. These observations reveal gravity-mode pulsations that indicate a stable region against convection in Saturn's deep interior.
