Binary orbital evolution driven by a circumbinary disc

Anna B. T. Penzlin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of the interaction between a circumbinary disc and a central binary system on the shrinking or expansion of the binary orbit, and finds that the range of binary expansion is wider than previously anticipated.

How Binaries Accrete: Hydrodynamic Simulations with Passive Tracer Particles

Christopher Tiede et al.

Summary: Through a detailed analysis of the binary accretion process, we find that binary accretion can be described in four phases, including gas transport, tidal distortion, formation of a mini-disk, and gas accretion. These phases work together to allow gas parcels to overcome the centrifugal barrier and ultimately accrete onto the binary components.

Parking planets in circumbinary discs

Anna B. T. Penzlin et al.

Summary: The study shows that for binary systems with intermediate eccentricities, using specific disc parameters can closely match the observations, with planets massive enough to open gaps in the disc, migrate towards the binary and ultimately agree well with the observed orbital parameters. For systems with very small or very large binary eccentricities, the match was not as good as systems with very eccentric discs and large inner cavities hindered close-in planet migration. Test simulations with higher than observed planet masses showed better agreement.

Survival of planet-induced vortices in 2D disks

Thomas Rometsch et al.

Summary: Through 2D numerical simulations, we find that vortices generated at the outer gap edge can survive for approximately 100-3000 planetary orbits, with the shortest lifetimes occurring under moderately efficient dissipation and cooling. Additionally, we observe long-lasting vortices with lifetimes of at least 15,000 orbits under very low viscosity and very short thermal relaxation timescales. Disk self-gravity significantly impacts vortex lifetimes, allowing both regular and long-lived vortices to persist.

Preventing Anomalous Torques in Circumbinary Accretion Simulations

Alexander J. Dittmann et al.

Summary: Numerical experiments are essential for studying the evolution of circumbinary disks. The use of numerical mass sinks helps prevent uncontrolled gas accumulation, but caution is needed to ensure results are not biased by numerical artifacts. Improved sink methods can reduce biases and influence the orbital evolution of binaries.

Vertical settling of pebbles in turbulent circumbinary discs and the in situ formation of circumbinary planets

Arnaud Pierens et al.

Summary: This paper presents global hydrodynamical simulations of circumbinary discs with embedded particles, showing the impact of particle stirring on planetary growth processes. It was found that higher solid-to-gas ratios lead to smaller gas vertical velocity fluctuations and dust scale heights. The study suggests that turbulence enables efficient pebble accretion and grain growth in regions farther from the binary.

Orbital Evolution of Equal-mass Eccentric Binaries due to a Gas Disk: Eccentric Inspirals and Circular Outspirals

Daniel J. D'Orazio et al.

Summary: The study reveals that binary systems with low initial eccentricities tend to evolve towards higher eccentricities and smaller semimajor axes, while others tend towards higher eccentricities and decreased semimajor axes. The transition in disk response from a nearly origin-symmetric state to a precessing asymmetric state causes a shift in the time rate of change of orbital parameters, leading to attracting solutions where the rates of change are zero. This phenomenon does not result in stalled eccentric binaries, but rather in oscillating orbital parameters and a drift of the semimajor axis due to the finite transition time between disk states.
