Solar jets observed with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS)

Summary: Solar jets are impulsively ejected, collimated plasma generated by magnetic reconnection. Recent studies using IRIS observations have provided several results on jets, including the ejection speed of cool plasma blobs and the slow velocity surges near hot jets after reconnection. Plasma characteristics of solar jets have been quantified and a multi-layer atmosphere model at reconnection sites has been proposed. IRIS observations revealed bidirectional flows and tilted spectra at reconnection sites, interpreted as the signature of twist in jets.

Polymeric jets throw light on the origin and nature of the forest of solar spicules

Summary: Spicules are plasma jets observed on the dynamic interface region between the visible solar surface and the hot corona, with about 3 million spicules estimated to be present on the Sun at any given time. Numerical simulations and fluid dynamics experiments show similarities between the behavior of simulated spicules in a solar-like atmosphere and polymeric fluid jets when subjected to harmonic forcing. The results suggest that non-linear focusing of quasi-periodic waves in anisotropic media can generate a forest of jets, providing insights into the mechanism underlying the ubiquity of jets on the Sun.

Multi-thermal atmosphere of a mini-solar flare during magnetic reconnection observed with IRIS

Summary: This study aims to investigate the plasma structure and dynamics at a jet base forming a mini-flare between two emerging magnetic fluxes using the IRIS and the Solar Dynamics Observatory instruments. Analysis of IRIS spectra in Mg II, C II, and Si IV ion lines revealed the presence of two chromospheric temperature clouds and proposed a stratification model for the mini-flare atmosphere. Additionally, the study quantifies the speed of cool clouds ejected perpendicularly to the jet direction, possibly indicating Alfvenic flows, for the first time using a cloud model technique.
