Modelling of vehicle-track related dynamics: a development of multi-finite-element coupling method and multi-time-step solution method

Lei Xu et al.

Summary: In this paper, modelling methods are developed to explore the dynamics of the vehicle-track system and its substructures. A coupled model is constructed to characterize the vehicle-track interaction, and a multi-finite-element coupling method is presented to integrate multiple substructures. A multi-time-step solution method is proposed to achieve a hybrid solution. Numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and practicality of the proposed model and methods.

Influence of the finite element type of the sleeper on vehicle-track interaction: a numerical study

Lei Xu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the influence of sleeper finite element types on system dynamic responses in the context of vehicle-track interaction. The model's effectiveness has been validated through both frequency- and time- domain analysis in the numerical study. Investigation has been conducted on the effects of sleeper finite element type, sleeper support stiffness, and damping coefficient on system responses.

Probabilistic assessment of vehicle derailment based on optimal ground motion intensity measure

Zhibin Jin et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to select optimal intensity measures (IMs) and develop fragility curves for the derailment of vehicles, using a nonlinear vehicle-track simulation and far-field and near-field ground motion records as input. The spectral IMs were found to be superior to peak-type IMs, with acceleration spectral intensity (ASI) and velocity spectral intensity (SI) identified as optimal IMs for evaluating derailments. Developing derailment fragility curves for three levels of vehicle performance facilitated the probabilistic assessment of vehicle derailment in a performance-based manner.

Vehicle-track-tunnel dynamic interaction: a finite/infinite element modelling method

Lei Xu et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop coupled matrix formulations to characterize the dynamic interaction between the vehicle, track, and tunnel. The vehicle-track coupled system is established based on vehicle-track coupled dynamics theory. It is demonstrated that considering tunnel substructures is necessary for model validation, and the maximum number of elements in the tunnel segment is confirmed through numerical simulations.

Effects of horizontal ground motion incident angle on the seismic risk assessment of a high-speed railway continuous bridge

Biao Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of horizontal ground motion incident angle on a high-speed railway continuous bridge. The research found that longitudinal waves only cause seismic responses in the longitudinal direction, while waves in other directions can cause coupling responses in both longitudinal and transverse directions. The seismic damage of the sliding layer and CA mortar layer under transverse waves should receive more attention in seismic design.

Matrix coupled model for the vehicle-track interaction analysis featured to the railway crossing

Lei Xu et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a matrix coupled model for vehicle-track interaction analysis with a focus on the crossing panel. The model assumes elastic wheel-rail contact and demonstrates the determination of two-point contact during the transition of the wheel load in the crossing panel. Results show the model's capability in capturing the main features of wheel-rail interaction and analyze the impact of track irregularities on the interaction.

Numerical simulation for train-track-bridge dynamic interaction considering damage constitutive relation of concrete tracks

Lei Xu et al.

Summary: A novel and practical method is developed to depict the track slab damage and residual strain evolution, which considers the concrete damage constitutive relation within the train-track-bridge dynamics framework. A three-step strain method is presented to determine the load/unloading, compression/tension status of track slab elements ergodically. The effectiveness of the model in characterizing strain/stress relation of concrete is validated through experimental and numerical studies.

Disaggregation of probabilistic seismic hazard and construction of conditional spectrum for China

Kun Ji et al.

Summary: This study constructed a probabilistic seismic hazard map for mainland China, which showed consistent PGA values with the fifth-generation seismic hazard map for most principal cities. A three-dimensional disaggregation scheme was then performed for PGA and 5%-damped spectral acceleration corresponding to mean return periods of 475 and 2475 years.
