Aquaculture as a circular bio-economy model with Galicia as a study case: How to transform waste into revalorized by-products

M. Fraga-Corral et al.

Summary: Aquaculture generates a significant amount of waste, and European legislation encourages proper management and sustainable utilization of these wastes. The application of circular bio-economy can protect human and animal health and the environment. In Galicia, aquaculture is an important industry that needs to be integrated into the circular bio-economy for improved production efficiency.

Upcycled aquaculture waste as textile ingredient for promoting circular economy

Erh-Jen Hou et al.

Summary: Fish farming in Asia's coastline provides a stable source of protein, and the upcycling of fish scales has led to the development of novel textile material called collagen modification polyester UMORFIL(R) T. This material has unique properties including a natural champagne-gold color, enhanced hand-feel, and odor control, making it suitable for functional textiles.

Biofixation of CO2 from a power plant through large-scale cultivation of Spirulina maxima

Siriluck Iamtham et al.

Summary: This study successfully cultivated Spirulina using flue gas emitted from a power plant, and found that an initial pH of 9.0 and a lower carbon source concentration can promote algal growth and maximize biomass yields. The light conditions and CO2 concentration also play a crucial role in algal growth and biomass production.

Technical insights into the production of green fuel from CO2 sequestered algal biomass: A conceptual review on green energy

Jayaseelan Arun et al.

Summary: Algae are a promising energy reserve for biofuel production due to their ability to sequester carbon dioxide efficiently. Hydrothermal liquefaction is the preferred mode for algae biomass conversion into biofuels, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions and higher energy value. This review highlights the potential of algae-based bioenergy for green energy and environmental impact evaluation.

Phycocapture of CO2 as an option to reduce greenhouse gases in cities: Carbon sinks in urban spaces

Itzel Y. Lopez-Pacheco et al.

Summary: Climate change is a shift in average weather patterns over a long period, caused by greenhouse gas emissions. This phenomenon leads to various negative effects such as rising sea levels and impacts on human health. Efforts to reduce greenhouse gases include the potential use of microalgae for CO2 bio-capture, which could effectively mitigate CO2 emissions.

Aquaculture wastewater treatment through microalgal. Biomass potential applications on animal feed, agriculture, and energy

Catarina Viegas et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of microalgae in remediating effluent from brown crab aquaculture. Various microalgae strains showed high removal efficiencies for nitrogen, phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand. Among them, Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus exhibited the best performance. Supplementation with NaNO3 improved nutrient removal by microalgae, with resulting biomass potentially suitable for aquaculture feeds. Additionally, the biomass of these microalgae strains showed promising potential as biostimulants for germination of wheat and watercress.
