Advances and trends in biotechnological production of natural astaxanthin by Phaffia rhodozyma yeast

Cassamo U. Mussagy et al.

Summary: This article reviews the main methods for producing Astaxanthin (AXT) using the yeast Phaffia rhodozyma strains, emphasizing the impact of conventional and non-conventional procedures for extracting AXT from yeast cells. Furthermore, future research directions are identified, including the use of low-cost residues to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of the bioprocess, the use of environmentally-friendly and low-energy operations for the extraction and purification of AXT, as well as the need for further human clinical trials using yeast-based AXT.
