Dietary supplementation of montmorillonite promotes growth and intestinal health in turbot (Scophthalmus maximus)

Xueying Shi et al.

Summary: This study found that feeding turbot with diets supplemented with different levels of montmorillonite had significant effects. Fish fed with 0.3% montmorillonite showed improved growth performance, hematological parameters, intestinal morphology, and increased diversity of intestinal microbiota.

Transcriptome analysis reveals the effects of sand substrate removal and body colour change of kuruma shrimp,Marsupenaeus japonicus

Jichen Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated a new way of culturing Kuruma shrimp without sand substrates, showing that the shrimp can survive and even change body color in such conditions. Transcriptome analysis provided valuable insights into the genetic changes associated with the removal of sand substrates, revealing altered expression levels of key genes in shrimps cultured without sand substrates.

On how montmorillonite as an ingredient in animal feed functions

Jia Hui Liu et al.

Summary: Montmorillonite (Mt) is an effective feed additive that can remove mycotoxins and bacteria in feed and gastrointestinal tract of the animal by surface adsorption, electrostatic adsorption, and intermolecular force. Additionally, Mt can adsorb heavy metals effectively in feed by the exchangeability of interlayer cations and cation hydration-related swellability. Modification of Mt by metal ions, metal oxides, and organic cations can improve the adsorption efficiency of mycotoxins, bacteria, heavy metals, leading to enhanced intestinal health and growth performance of livestock, aquatic, and poultry, as well as improved milk, egg, and meat quality.

Effects of dietary manganese supplementation on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immune function and intestinal microbiota in Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

Lefei Jiao et al.

Summary: Through an 8-week feeding trial, this study determined the dietary manganese requirement for Litopenaeus vannamei, and evaluated the effects of manganese supplementation on its physiological and metabolic functions. The results showed that supplementing manganese at appropriate levels significantly improved antioxidant and immune functions in L. vannamei, and also resulted in changes in intestinal microbiota composition.
