Methodological Considerations for Studies in Sport and Exercise Science with Women as Participants: A Working Guide for Standards of Practice for Research on Women

Kirsty J. Elliott-Sale et al.

Summary: Until recently, there has been a lack of demand and interest in female-specific sport and exercise science data, resulting in most data being derived from studies with male participants. A shortage of specialist knowledge on female physiology in the sport science community, coupled with a reluctance to adapt experimental designs for female-specific considerations, has hindered progress in this field. Furthermore, a lack of agreement on terminology and methodological approaches has impeded researchers' ability to develop evidenced-based guidelines for female exercisers.
