Particle-like topologies in light

Summary: This study experimentally creates and measures a topological 3D skyrmionic hopfion in fully structured light, establishing the skyrmionic mapping by adjusting both polarization and phase profiles. The resulting light field's Stokes parameters and phase are synthesized into a Hopf fibration texture, allowing for volumetric full-field reconstruction of the Pi(3) mapping and measurement of a quantized topological charge. This research opens new avenues for 3D optical data encoding and metrology, providing experimentally-accessible photonic analogues to various particle-like 3D topological textures.

Generalized and multiplexed q-plates emulated via an LCoS-based device

Summary: In this paper, an experimental device based on a liquid crystal on silicon display is implemented to emulate generalized q-plates. The feasibility of this method is proven by testing q-plates defined by linear and nonlinear functions and studying their effects on polarized beams. An application is proposed to create arbitrary superpositions of vector and vortex beams using multiplexed q-plates, with good agreement between theoretical and experimental results.
