The Dynamics of Musical Participation

Andrea Schiavio et al.

Summary: This paper argues that musical participation can be better understood through analysis using dynamical systems theory and coordination dynamics, offering new theoretical tools to describe aspects of joint musical experience in greater detail. By characterizing musical participation as an open, non-equilibrium, dynamical system informed by dynamical systems theory, new interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of musicology, psychology, philosophy, and cognitive (neuro)science may be stimulated to provide new insights into the core features of musical participation.

Music as a coevolved system for social bonding

Patrick E. Savage et al.

Summary: The development of music in human society is closely related to social bonding, with proto-musical behaviors that originated as cultural inventions impacting social bonding and biological evolution, generating deep connections between production, perception, prediction, and social reward. Through interdisciplinary evidence, the hypothesis of music and social bonding offers a comprehensive theory for the biological and cultural evolution of music.

Collective music listening: Movement energy is enhanced by groove and visual social cues

Dobromir Dotov et al.

Summary: The regularity of musical beat promotes movement synchrony among people, increasing interpersonal trust, affiliation, and cooperation. Higher groove music induces stronger desire to move, and visual social information, such as having eyes open, enhances movement energy and coordination.

Move like everyone is watching: Social context affects head motion and gaze in string quartet performance

Laura Bishop et al.

Summary: The study found that ensemble musicians' visual and body communication during performances vary in response to changing musical, situational, and social factors. Differences in gaze and body motion also reflect the musicians' roles in the ensemble.
