Capturing the swelling of solid-electrolyte interphase in lithium metal batteries

Zewen Zhang et al.

Summary: Characterizing liquid-solid interfaces remains challenging due to the limitations of existing tools. This study adopts a thin film vitrification method to preserve and study the structure and chemistry of key interfaces in batteries. The research reveals substantial swelling of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on lithium metal anodes in different electrolytes, with the swelling behavior correlated to battery performance.

Promoting Mechanistic Understanding of Lithium Deposition and Solid-Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) Formation Using Advanced Characterization and Simulation Methods: Recent Progress, Limitations, and Future Perspectives

Yaolin Xu et al.

Summary: In recent years, research on Li metal anodes as an alternative to graphite anodes in Li-ion batteries has gained significant attention due to its potential in boosting the energy density of lithium batteries. However, the practical use of Li metal anodes has been hindered by issues of unstable Li deposition and poor cyclability. This article discusses recent advances in understanding the mechanisms of Li deposition/dissolution and solid-electrolyte-interphase (SEI) formation through advanced characterization techniques and simulation methods. The limitations and open questions in these processes are also addressed, along with perspectives on future research and potential methods for obtaining new insights.

Non-Solvating and Low-Dielectricity Cosolvent for Anion-Derived Solid Electrolyte Interphases in Lithium Metal Batteries

Jun-Fan Ding et al.

Summary: The cosolvents play a critical role in the solvation structure of Li+ and the formation of SEI on working Li metal anodes, with NL cosolvents enhancing the interaction between anion and Li+ to induce an anion-derived inorganic-rich SEI. A solvent with proper relative binding energy toward Li+ and dielectric constant is suitable as NL cosolvent.

Establishing the Preferential Adsorption of Anion-Dominated Solvation Structures in the Electrolytes for High-Energy-Density Lithium Metal Batteries

Dengji Xiao et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) in Li metal batteries (LMBs) mainly originates from the kinetic instability of Li+-solvation structures in the electrolyte. By integrating preferentially adsorbed anions into the Li+-solvation structures, the formation of an anion-derived SEI layer with high Li-ion conductivity and low Li atom adhesion energy is achieved, facilitating high Coulombic efficiency and stable cycling in realistic testing conditions.
