Adjunct Therapy for CD4+ T-Cell Recovery, Inflammation and Immune Activation in People Living With HIV: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: The systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that there are no specific safe and effective medications for improving CD4(+) T-cell reconstitution. The immunological benefits or adverse events mainly depend on the safety, dosage, and duration of the candidate medication use, as well as whether it is combined with ART.

Platelet biomarkers for a descending cognitive function: A proteomic approach

Haitao Yu et al.

Summary: Memory loss is the most common clinical sign in Alzheimer's disease, and searching for peripheral biomarkers to predict cognitive decline is promising for early diagnosis. Platelets share similarities to neuron biology and may serve as a peripheral matrix for biomarkers of neurological disorders. The study identified 360 differential proteins in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease patients, with potential for early screening of AD using a combination of decreased platelet proteins.

Pre-Digested Protein Enteral Nutritional Supplementation Enhances Recovery of CD4+ T Cells and Repair of Intestinal Barrier in HIV-Infected Immunological Non-Responders

Shi-Tao Geng et al.

Summary: The study found that oral supplementation of a pre-digested enteral nutritional supplement significantly increased CD4(+) T cell and CD8(+) T cell counts. Among pro-inflammatory cytokines in the serum, only IL-1 beta level decreased significantly, while TNF-beta increased. Levels of intestinal mucosal damage markers decreased significantly, and body weight, body mass index, albumin, and hemoglobin significantly increased.

Alarmin S100A9 restricts retroviral infection by limiting reverse transcription in human dendritic cells

Ghizlane Maarifi et al.

Summary: Dendritic cell subsets like Langerhans cells play a role in pathogen sensing, and the alarmin S100A9 has been identified as an intracellular antiretroviral factor. The expression of S100A9 is decreased upon LC maturation and correlates with enhanced susceptibility to HIV-1 infection. Silencing of S100A9 relieves HIV-1 restriction in human LC, while overexpression in cell lines promotes resistance to both HIV-1 and MLV by affecting reverse transcription.

Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell transfusion in immune non-responders with AIDS: a multicenter randomized controlled trial

Lifeng Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (hUC-MSC) infusion was safe and well-tolerated for immune non-responder patients with chronic HIV-1 infection. After 48 weeks of treatment, the low-dose group showed a better increase in CD4+ T cell counts compared to the high-dose and control groups, indicating a potential for immune reconstitution improvement. Further investigation in larger cohort studies is needed to fully assess the therapeutic efficacy of hUC-MSC treatment.

Gut lactate-producing bacteria promote CD4 T cell recovery on Anti-retroviral therapy in HIV-infected patients

Wei Lyu et al.

Summary: A study revealed that certain lactate-producing bacteria are associated with immune recovery in HIV-infected patients and can promote CD4 + cell restoration in a mouse model. These findings support the use of these bacteria as a therapeutic strategy for improving CD4 + cell count in HIV-infected patients.
