Comparing different light-degradation approaches for the degradation of crystal violet and eosin Y

Mimi J. den Uijl et al.

Summary: Organic colourants play important roles in various fields with photostability being a key characteristic. This study compared methods for studying photodegradation using Eosin Y and crystal violet as test compounds. The liquid-core-waveguide (LCW) cell method showed faster degradation rates and online analysis capabilities, making it a promising tool for efficient studies into the chemistry of photodegradation. However, differences in light sources hindered quantitative comparisons of results.

Photostability of apocarotenoids on surface of TiO2 semiconductor nanoparticles

D. D. D. H. Alwis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photochemical stability of apocarotenoids containing terminal carboxylic groups adsorbed onto the TiO2 semiconductor surface using UV-vis, fluorescence, fluorescence-excitation, and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopic studies. The results showed that two apocarotenoids, bixin and norbixin, strongly bind to the TiO2 surface and exhibit different photophysical properties compared to unbound apocarotenoids. Fluorescence quenching data revealed that norbixin has a higher binding constant compared to bixin at 293 K, indicating a similar mechanism of binding for both compounds. Additionally, DSCs assembled with norbixin as the sensitizer showed greater efficiency in converting solar energy to electricity compared to those assembled with bixin.
