Phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes as lifetime-based biological sensors for photoluminescence lifetime imaging microscopy

Jie Zhou et al.

Summary: Luminescent iridium(III) complexes have been extensively studied as intracellular sensors for photoluminescence microscopy imaging due to their high phosphorescence quantum yields, photostability, good cell membrane permeability, and rich and sensitive photophysical properties. Photoluminescence lifetime imaging microscopy (PLIM) allows for visualizing and mapping the decay of luminescent dyes in the time domain during cellular imaging. This review article focuses on the design and applications of lifetime-responsive phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes as imaging reagents for mapping environmental parameters and sensing analytes of interest in intracellular conditions.

Dual-lanthanide urea metal-organic framework based fluorescent traffic light microsensor for solvent decoding and visual trace water assay

Long Yu et al.

Summary: A rapid and sensitive sensor for decoding organic solvents and detecting water content is developed. The sensor is based on a dual-lanthanide metal-organic framework and utilizes innovative response mechanisms to precisely regulate the energy transfer. The sensor achieves ultra-low limit of detection, broad response range, and high-fluorescence color changing. A logic device based on the sensor is designed for easy water detection, similar to a smart traffic light sensor. Additionally, a paper microsensor is constructed for real-time detection of trace water in organic solvents.

Nanomolar determination of nitrofurans in water via excited-state inter-ligand proton transfer

Xiaojun Zhang et al.

Summary: The development of highly efficient sensing systems for trace organic contaminants requires the understanding and application of excited-state inter-ligand proton transfer (ESILPT) processes. Utilizing strategically synthesized lanthanide complexes with excellent photophysical properties, a feasible pathway to construct efficient chemo-sensors for ultra-sensitive detection of nitrofuran antibiotics has been demonstrated. This advancement is expected to broaden and deepen research in complex-based luminophores, potentially useful in trace detection and biological imaging.

Accessing lanthanide-based, in situ illuminated optical turn-on probes by modulation of the antenna triplet state energy

Alexia G. Cosby et al.

Summary: A novel approach to responsive luminescent Tb(III) probes was developed by modulating the antenna excited triplet state energy. A series of pyridyl-functionalized lanthanide complexes were designed, with triplet energies between 25,800 and 30,400 cm(-1). Conversion of Tb(L3) to Tb(L4) resulted in a 500-fold increase in quantum yield, demonstrating the potential of antenna triplet state energy modulation for biocompatible Tb-based optical turn-on probes.
