Nationally representative estimates of the cost of adequate diets, nutrient level drivers, and policy options for households in rural Malawi

Kate R. Schneider

Summary: This study uses the least-cost diet method to evaluate the access to nutritious foods in rural Malawi. The findings show that larger households have more diverse nutrient needs and higher costs. Policy scenarios suggest that selenium soil biofortification of maize can lower the cost and eliminate the shadow price of copper. Other value chain scenarios have limited impact on the cost of nutrient-dense foods.

Affordability of nutritious diets in rural India

Kalyani Raghunathan et al.

Summary: This study highlights the severe issue of malnutrition in India, especially concerning anemia in children and mothers. It delves into the affordability of nutritious diets, concluding that a significant portion of the rural poor in 2011 could not afford a recommended diet. A holistic approach to improving the affordability of nutritious food groups, reassessing social protection schemes, ensuring sustained income growth for the poor, and monitoring food prices and dietary costs more effectively are crucial for achieving nutritional security in India.

Cost and affordability of nutritious diets at retail prices: Evidence from 177 countries

Yan Bai et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between the daily cost of essential nutrients and dietary energy in 177 countries worldwide, finding that nutrient adequate diets are more expensive than energy-sufficient ones, with rural travel times and electrification being significant factors influencing diet costs. The data suggests opportunities for targeted policies and programs to improve nutrition status among low-income populations by reducing market prices, increasing nutrition assistance, and enhancing household incomes.

Assessing Diet Quality Where Families Share Their Meals: Evidence from Malawi

Kate R. Schneider et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a household nutrient requirement benchmark that satisfies all members' needs and found that in the context of shared meals, almost all households' food consumption is insufficiently nutrient dense, especially in households with more women and adolescent girls. Meeting the needs of women, adolescent girls, and young children using shared diets would require significantly more iron, zinc, phosphorus, and vitamin C compared to individualized diets.
