The effects of E-Verify on the share of labor-Intensive and capital-Intensive crops: Evidence from farm-level data

Summary: Immigration enforcement policies have negative effects on the US supply of farm labor, impacting the production decisions of agricultural producers. This study finds that a shrinking labor force leads to a decline in the production of labor-intensive crops and an increase in the production of capital-intensive crops.

Labor shortages and immigration: The case of the Canadian agriculture sector

Summary: By using a rich longitudinal micro-database from the Canadian Employer-Employee Dynamic Database, factors influencing the recruitment and retention of Canadian-born and immigrant workers in the primary agriculture and food processing sectors are identified. Policymakers are investigating whether immigrants with previous Canadian experience are more likely to stay in these sectors after entering.

Reducing the Nursery Pesticide Footprint with Laser-guided, Variable-rate Spray Application Technology

Summary: Nursery producers face the challenge of growing plants with minimal damage from insects or diseases, traditionally using inefficient air-blast sprayers for routine pesticide application. The new variable-rate spray technology allows for targeted applications with reduced pesticide volume. This study compared a prototype variable-rate sprayer with a traditional air-blast sprayer, showing promising results in reducing pesticide use while maintaining control of powdery mildew.

Summary: The study compared the effects of variable-rate and constant-rate sprayers in apple orchards and grape vineyards, finding that the variable-rate sprayer applied significantly less volume but the constant-rate mode had higher coverage.
