Recycled versus Natural-Rubber Fiber-Reinforced Bearings for Base Isolation: Review of the Experimental Findings

Summary: Efforts in the past decade have been made to develop low-cost seismic protection systems using flexible materials to replace steel sheets in conventional base isolation devices. Recycled rubber bearings have shown promising performance in unbounded configurations. Although the performance of natural rubber bearings is better, recycled rubber devices have great potential in protecting non-engineered structures from seismic inputs at a lower cost.
