Combustion synthesis of Si2N2O powder for photovoltaic silicon casting application

Shuxiang Deng et al.

Summary: Single-phase silicon oxynitride (Si2N2O) was prepared by combustion synthesis with Si and SiO2 in a N-2 atmosphere. The effects of process parameters on combustion temperature, phase composition, and microstructure were investigated, followed by testing the wetting behavior of Si melt on the Si2N2O coating. Results showed poor wettability of Si melt on the Si2N2O coating, making it a potential novel releasing agent material for photovoltaic silicon casting application.

Multifunctional Macroassembled Graphene Nanofilms with High Crystallinity

Li Peng et al.

Summary: A cooling-contraction method is used to separate large-area graphene oxide-assembled films from substrates, yielding highly crystalline graphene nanofilms after heat treatment. These nanofilms exhibit excellent mechanical and electrical properties, suitable for applications in sound generation and subwavelength surfaces.

Achieving large uniform tensile elasticity in microfabricated diamond

Chaoqun Dang et al.

Summary: Diamond, as the hardest material in nature and an extreme electronic material, can undergo deep elastic straining to fundamentally change its bulk band structures and achieve sample-wide uniform elastic strains, which highlights its immense application potential for photonics, electronics, and quantum information technologies.

Spontaneous organization of supracolloids into three-dimensional structured materials

Mohammad-Amin Moradi et al.

Summary: Researchers combined colloidal organization and self-assembly of multicomponent particles to create hierarchical multicomponent materials. By tuning the electrostatic attraction, particles reorganize into three-dimensional structured materials upon drying. This approach can be useful for fabricating hierarchical hybrid materials for distinct technological applications.

Nanoburl Graphites

Kunpeng Lin et al.

Summary: The study introduces a nanoburl mechanism to enhance the strength of graphite by embedding nanodiamond particles converted into graphite onions in the graphite lattice planes. By building covalent bonds and forming positive/negative charge domains at the interface between graphite onions and flakes, the bonding between them is strengthened, leading to a consolidation of loose compaction of graphite powder. The proposed mechanism has shown its potential by increasing the strength of graphite five times compared to conventional methods, and may have implications for enhancing the properties of other layered materials.

Roughening for Strengthening and Toughening in Monolayer Carbon Based Composites

Wenhui Xie et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that layered 3D MAC composites exhibit outstanding strength and plastic-like strain due to surface roughening and the ultra-compliant nature of MACs. Unlike using intact graphene or multiple stacked MACs, 3D MAC materials show superior mechanical properties.

Elastic ice microfibers

Peizhen Xu et al.

Summary: Ice grown as single-crystal ice microfibers (IMFs) exhibits high elasticity and can be reversibly bent at low temperatures. A pressure-induced phase transition of ice from Ih to II was observed on the compressive side of sharply bent IMFs. The high optical quality of these flexible ice fibers opens up opportunities for low-loss optical waveguiding and whispering-gallery-mode resonance.
