Porous structure design and mechanical behavior analysis based on TPMS for customized root analogue implant

Kaile Song et al.

Summary: A porous structure design and optimization method for customized root analogue implants (RAIs) was proposed to reduce the stress shielding effect and accelerate the clinical implantation process. Through experiments and finite element analysis, it was found that the P and G structures with 30% and 40% porosity can promote the growth of surrounding bone tissue and form long-term and stable osseointegration.

Additively Manufactured Gradient Porous Ti-6Al-4V Hip Replacement Implants Embedded with Cell-Laden Gelatin Methacryloyl Hydrogels

Elham Davoodi et al.

Summary: The development of porous implants with conflicting design criteria has been overcome by designing implants and scaffolds based on interconnected TPMS to enhance both biological response and mechanical strength. Gradually decreasing porosity from the surface to the center provides mechanical strength, while studying unit cell size helps discover the printability limit where specific surface area is maximized.

Functional repair of critically sized femoral defects treated with bioinspired titanium gyroid-sheet scaffolds

Cambre N. Kelly et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of gyroid-sheet titanium scaffolds produced via additive manufacturing in repairing critically sized bone defects in rats. The scaffolds showed promising results in repairing segmental defects and promoting bone growth, with superior torsional strength and stiffness compared to intact controls. This suggests a potential new treatment option for critically sized bone defects.

Application of Computational Method in Designing a Unit Cell of Bone Tissue Engineering Scaffold: A Review

Nur Syahirah Mustafa et al.

Summary: This paper highlights the importance of designing an ideal scaffold for bone tissue engineering through predicting and simulating properties. It discusses the use of computational methods in designing unit cells of scaffolds, categorizes designs into non-parametric and parametric, and explores various structure types. Software for simulating and designing bone tissue scaffolds is also presented along with challenges and future work recommendations.

Soap film inspired mechanical metamaterials approaching theoretical bound of stiffness across full density range

Biwei Deng et al.

Summary: Researchers have generated a series of mechanically isotropic ISO-CMC structures by imitating the natural occupation of periodic volume by inflated soap films, exhibiting bulk moduli over 94% of the theoretical limit. These phenomena are found to be in close relation to the curvature-driven design of their metamaterial structures.
