Wireless and battery-free technologies for neuroengineering

Sang Min Won et al.

Summary: This Review Article discusses recent progress in the development of miniaturized and ultralightweight devices for neuroengineering, which are wireless, battery-free, and fully implantable. These devices can restrict natural motions and prevent social interactions in animal models, limiting their utility in behavioural neuroscience research. However, advanced neural interfaces with optical, electrical, or fluidic functionality have emerged, capable of combining recording and stimulation modalities for closed-loop applications in basic studies or the treatment of abnormal physiological processes.

Wireless closed-loop optogenetics across the entire dorsoventral spinal cord in mice

Claudia Kathe et al.

Summary: Optoelectronic system allows precise control over targeted neurons and pathways in the brain of untethered animals, but such technology for the spinal cord is not well established. In this study, a new system was developed for ultrafast, wireless, closed-loop manipulation of targeted neurons and pathways across the entire spinal cord in untethered mice.

Temperature-responsive optogenetic probes of cell signaling

William Benman et al.

Summary: The study introduces single-component optogenetic probes with activation dynamics dependent on both light and temperature. The BcLOV4 photoreceptor was utilized to stimulate signaling in mammalian cells, showing tunable membrane translocation dynamics in response to light and temperature. Quantitative modeling predicted the activation dynamics of BcLOV4 and demonstrated its versatility in generating widely applicable optogenetic tools.

A low-cost, high-efficiency LED probe compatible with optical fiber port for optogenetics

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: Optogenetics, a crucial technique in neuroscience, combines optical techniques with genetics study to probe neural circuits. While tethered fiber systems face issues like restricted movement, implanted LED solutions successfully solve these problems but different setups create difficulty in conducting experiments. A miniature, low-cost, high-efficiency LED probe compatible with optical fiber port is developed as a universal interface to address this challenge.

Summary: A robust Cu conductor on a glass substrate for thin-film μ LEDs is achieved through flash-induced chemical/physical interlocking between Cu and glass. The flash-activated Cu electrode exhibits an adhesion energy of 10 J m(-2), which is five times higher than that of vacuum-deposited Cu, due to these flash-induced interfacial interactions.
