Projected Estimates of Opioid Mortality After Community-Level Interventions

Benjamin P. Linas et al.

Summary: The study identified three interventions (initiating more people to MOUD, increasing retention with MOUD, and increasing naloxone distribution) associated with a 40% reduction in opioid overdose mortality. The results showed that only communities with increased capacity for MOUD treatment and retention experienced the desired decrease in overdose mortality. These findings could help guide the development of community-level interventions to combat opioid overdose deaths.

Identifying individuals with opioid use disorder: Validity of International Classification of Diseases diagnostic codes for opioid use, dependence and abuse

Pooja Lagisetty et al.

Summary: This study investigates the positive predictive value of using ICD codes to identify patients with OUD. Results show that the majority of patients were categorized as high likelihood of OUD, while a small percentage had limited aberrant opioid use or were prescribed opioids without evidence of misuse.

Targeting community-based naloxone distribution using opioid overdose death rates: A descriptive analysis of naloxone rescue kits and opioid overdose deaths in Massachusetts and Rhode Island

Xiao Zang et al.

Summary: The study compared naloxone distribution and opioid overdose death rates in Massachusetts and Rhode Island from 2016 to 2019, identifying improvements in both states with a faster rate in Rhode Island. Urban areas showed higher naloxone distribution relative to opioid overdose deaths, while some counties had high overdose death rates but low naloxone availability through OEND programs.

Characterizing initiation, use, and discontinuation of extended-release buprenorphine in a nationally representative United States commercially insured cohort

Jake R. Morgan et al.

Summary: The study found that the discontinuation rate of extended-release buprenorphine in real-world settings was not significantly different from other MOUD, indicating that treatment retention remains a major obstacle.
