Schistosoma mansoni Eggs Modulate the Timing of Granuloma Formation to Promote Transmission

Kevin K. Takaki et al.

Summary: Schistosome eggs and beads can induce granulomatous response, but only mature Schistosoma mansoni eggs recruit macrophages to form granulomas, facilitating egg extrusion. This indicates the crucial role of the eggshell in immunity.

Transcriptional profiles of genes potentially involved in extracellular vesicle biogenesis in Schistosoma japonicum

Summary: Recent studies have shown that Schistosoma can secrete extracellular vesicles (EVs), and identified genes potentially involved in EV biogenesis in Schistosoma japonicum, which are differentially expressed in different developmental stages and sexes of the worms.

Schistosoma mansoni egg-derived extracellular vesicles: A promising vaccine candidate against murine schistosomiasis

Shereen F. Mossallam et al.

Summary: Extracellular vesicles (EVs), protein-loaded nano-scaled particles released by eukaryotes and prokaryotes, have potential as next-generation vaccines. Schistosomal EVs are being explored for their immunizing potentials. In this study, EVs derived from cultured Schistosoma mansoni eggs showed significant reduction of parasite burden and induced high levels of protective interferon gamma and antibodies, demonstrating their potential as a vaccine candidate.

Analysis of Schistosoma mansoni Extracellular Vesicles Surface Glycans Reveals Potential Immune Evasion Mechanism and New Insights on Their Origins of Biogenesis

Summary: Parasitic helminths manipulate host immunity through the release of EVs, with studies showing that Schistosoma mansoni EVs have multiple glycan structures on their surface, including sialic acid which may play a role in infection.

Extracellular Vesicles: Schistosomal Long-Range Precise Weapon to Manipulate the Immune Response

Dror Avni et al.

Summary: Schistosomiasis, caused by the helminth parasite Schistosoma, affects over 240 million people globally. The parasites release extracellular vesicles (EVs) containing miRNAs that modulate the host immune response, creating a favorable environment for parasitic survival. Understanding the bioactive cargo and selective targeting of these EVs may lead to the development of new tools for diagnostics and therapy for schistosomiasis and immune-related disorders.

Effect of celecoxib against different developmental stages of experimental Schistosoma mansoni infection

Iman Fathy Abou-El-Naga et al.

Summary: Oral administration of celecoxib for five days showed significant efficacy against Schistosoma mansoni infection, inducing reduction in worm burden, tissue egg count, and improving hepatic tissue pathology. Celecoxib was more potent than praziquantel in parasitological parameters, damaging the tegument and reproductive organs of adult worms.
