Regulation of heart rate in vertebrates during hypoxia: A comparative overview

William Joyce et al.

Summary: Acute exposure to low oxygen leads to conflicting demands on the heart, resulting in tachycardia or bradycardia. While mammals and fishes show different mechanisms in heart rate regulation during hypoxia, there are similarities in the underlying mechanisms. Bradycardia may primarily serve to protect the heart.

Evaluation of O-adrenergic ligands for development of pharmacological heart failure and transparency models in zebrafish

Monika Maciag et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular toxicity is a common reason for clinical trial failure, and early identification of cardioprotective strategies is crucial. The use of zebrafish as a model in preclinical studies has great potential in drug discovery. This study established two novel pharmacological models of heart failure in zebrafish using OAR agonists and evaluated their effects on mortality, heart rate, and morphology. The results demonstrate the value of zebrafish as a tool for cardiovascular research and its ability to mimic human cardiac physiology.

Use of a carbonic anhydrase Ca17a knockout to investigate mechanisms of ion uptake in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Alex M. Zimmer et al.

Summary: In zebrafish, the Ca17a isoform is abundantly expressed in Na+-absorbing/H+-secreting cells and plays a role in ion and acid-base regulation. Knockout of ca17a was found to be lethal in mutants, with decreased survival rates. Mutants showed alterations in ion uptake rates, particularly with Cl uptake, but the underlying causes of lethality remain unclear.

Hif-1α is not required for the development of cardiac adrenergic control in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

William Joyce et al.

Summary: The study found no evidence that adrenergic cardiac control was perturbed in larval or adult zebrafish lacking Hif-1 alpha. This suggests that Hif-1 alpha is not essential for the normal development of cardiovascular control or adult sympathetic cardiac innervation in zebrafish, although it may play a redundant or auxiliary role.
