Roxadustat for the treatment of anemia in patients with lower-risk myelodysplastic syndrome: Open-label, dose-selection, lead-in stage of a phase 3 study

David H. Henry et al.

Summary: The study confirmed that among the three starting doses of oral roxadustat, 2.5 mg/kg showed the best performance in treating anemia, facilitating transfusion independence and reducing the need for RBC transfusions. Roxadustat administered orally thrice weekly was well-tolerated, with no fatalities or progression to acute myeloid leukemia observed.

Calcitonin gene-related peptide-targeting drugs for migraine: how pharmacology might inform treatment decisions

Linda Al-Hassany et al.

Summary: Migraine is the second most disabling disorder worldwide, and the pharmacology and clinical effects of CGRP-targeted drugs are not fully understood. Factors such as sex, body-mass index, age, and ethnic background may affect the pharmacokinetics of these treatments, particularly Gepants. Patient characteristics may play a more prominent role in the management of migraine as more is learned about CGRP-targeted therapies.

Skimmetin/osthole mitigates pain-depression dyad via inhibiting inflammatory and oxidative stress-mediated neurotransmitter dysregulation

Lovedeep Singh et al.

Summary: The study explored the beneficial effects of skimmetin and osthole in a pain-depression dyad induced by reserpine in mice. Results suggest that skimmetin/osthole may exert anti-nociceptive, anti-depressant, and improved cognitive effects via inhibiting inflammatory and oxidative stress-mediated neurotransmitter dysregulation.

Photophobia in migraine: A symptom cluster?

Arnold J. Wilkins et al.

Summary: The article discusses photophobia in migraine and suggests that a cortical mechanism may provide a parsimonious explanation for discomfort from various forms of visual stimulation. Future research comparing retinal and cortical contributions to photophobia in migraine may help identify biomarkers and treatment mechanisms.

Headache in transgender and gender-diverse patients: A narrative review

Jennifer A. Hranilovich et al.

Summary: This review discusses the unique aspects of managing headache in gender minorities and current research, including the potential relationship between gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) and headache. Despite being medically underserved, the population of transgender and gender-diverse individuals has seen limited research on headache. Understanding the effects of hormonal therapy on headache in transgender patients is essential for providing quality care in this population.

Hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor roxadustat (FG-4592) protects against renal ischemia/reperfusion injury by inhibiting inflammation

A-Feng Miao et al.

Summary: FG-4592 treatment can protect against ischemia/reperfusion-induced kidney injury by reducing tubular cell injuries and suppressing inflammatory responses. The study suggests that FG-4592 treatment may offer a potential clinical approach in treating acute kidney injury.
